    IE Popup

Ok I no longer use IE, I haven't in many many months.. but I have this annoying problem. Almost everytime I open my media folder (d:\media) I get a IE ad popup. It happens on other folders as well but media is the last one I can recall and most noticeable. I do use ad-aware and I have run it and immediately opened media and gotten the popup. I have no idea what could be causing this, or how to stop it.

    Any advice or suggestions?

This could be related to the Windows Messenger service. This will give you ads in Windows. See the page about it on the GRC site here: http://grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

If that doesn't help, try the following as a second option:

To take care of this simply go to your control panel and then to Administrative Tools, from there locate the Services icon and click it to open, then look through the list and locate Messenger, right-click and open the properties for that and from there disable it. It is used on LANs (Local Area Networks) to send messages to others on your network, for admins to alert to maintenance or system shutdowns for whatever reason, etc.

No it's not Windows Messenger i've already got that turned off. It's a popup IE window not a regular Win2k window.

Do you still have the Messenger service turned off? Although you may have the program turned off or deleted, there still is the service running which will gove you popups. Just download the GRC Shoot the Messenger program and see if it detects the service as on or off. Just tried it myself and my Messenger service was on, even though the program and registry keys were deleted.

He is talking about pop-ups opening in an IE window when he doesnt use IE anymore.

It is happening because whatever browser he is using isnt set as a default for everything.
