Your opinion on socialistic policies in America.

What do you think about Socialistic Policies in America? I think that without some degree of socialism, america would not be a Republic anymore. I see people talking like it's completely horrible in any degree in government. IMO, without influences of marxism and socialism on capitolism in the late 1800's eventually the working class, working long hard hours for almost nothing, would have started a revolution and possibly started a Marxist/ Communist government here. So, a certain degree of Socialistic policies in America has really saved our governement contrary to what some seem to believe on here. I just thought I'd post this to see what you guys think about this.
    Edit:changed socialism to socialistic polices

I don't mean total socialism, I mean to a certain extint(sp) that already exists in the government now. I may have totally the wrong idea on this as i really don't know a ton about it.

    Re: Your opinion on socialism.

basically i think it should be called "socialistic policies" in this sense. "socialism" to me implies all out socialism, when with many countries thats not quite the case.

We pay taxes and the government gives it to the poor aka welfare. Which seems like a basic form of wealth sharing to me. wealth sharing=socialism.

WTF? Welfare, Unions, Unemployment, common medical billing practice, ANY non-flat tax, grants, government loans, etc; socialistic policies have a strong hold in america. They have grown and shrunk as political powers shift, but are always there. They haven't 'spread like a plague' in 200 years, that's pure blind McCarthyism.

Re: Your opinion on socialistic policies in America.

It always suprises me how some people manage to confuse socialism with communism and assume that just because the USSR/China etc sat under a communist banner that they had socialist ideals...to that I say bunkum.

Don't get me wrong, socialism has been proven to be a flawed system (but no more than capitalism)..it wasn't socialist ideals that brought the USSR down but the lack of a fair system of govt. To assume that socialism and democracy are mutually exlusive is at best unimaginative at worst stupid..

For example it's fundamental socialist ideals that enabled the NHS and welfare state in this country (UK) and what was for many years the envy of the rest of the world. And still today political parties at both ends of the spectrum while have different ideas on how it all should be run, agree that it should remain. I cant believe how anyone can deny that free healthcare at the point of service for those that need it most, can be seen as a bad thing (even if it is a socialist ideal)

I get the feeling sometimes if I handed someone a bar of gold painted as lead they's throw away 'coz they don't like lead.

True socialist ideals are morally very strong, as are true capitalist ideals, its a pity that politicians are not....A good politician whether right-wing or left-wing both want to do the best for their country and people and just have different ideas how to get there. We just need a few good politicians (they are few and far between on either side). Do not dismiss the ideals of either side out of hand because real-life and doing the right thing is not as black and white as right-wing/left-wing politics, dont allow politicians to intellecually short change you guys if its right it right regardless of whether its a socialist ideal or not...

Re: Your opinion on socialistic policies in America.

Perhaps it would help if you presented a definition of socialism as you understand it and the specific aspects of concern. One of the problems that occurs in these types of discussion is people using labels, such as socialism, and presuming all understand it in exactly the same way. Further, it's important to understand that labels often are generated within a specific timeframe in which specific connotations, and specific emotions, were associated with the label. Depending upon the ages of the respondents to your query, you can get very different reactions from individuals who may have similar values. Therefore, it is ultimately of more value to discuss the specific points of a particular dynamic rather that discussing the label.

    Dang,

There is pure capitalism only exists in theory. Just as a purely free market only exists in theory. In understanding this, people must realize that there will always be socialism in any capitalist society.
