Question Business license, Tax ID # etc....

Has anyone set themselves up to collect sales tax on system builds? I'm wondering how hard it is to get a business license, maybe incorporate & register to accept sales tax so that I can start building for small companies etc. You can only build so many for friends & there is definitely money to be made around here.

I don't know what the laws are in FL, but setting up a resellers license in NC was a piece of cake. I have not incorporated as of yet, but plan on it in future. When you do it will run about $7-1000 if using a lawyer. Much cheaper if you do it yourself. Check the states Dept. of Revenue web site to download fors to apply for tax license etc. Not hard to do. I have been running a repair/system building co. for a couple of months. Doing well so far, just tough to market that and have a FT job.

I did that yesterday online, so it should take a couple of days to get my id #. As for a resellers license, is that considered a business license as well, or does it just allow you to sell the computers you build? Thanks for all the input!

Resellers license lets you buy without tax and charge tax upon resale.

You would probably do better to set yourself up as an LLC rather than incorporate -- it is much, much simpler. Check the FL secretary of state's website. Most likely they will have a form to fill out to set up an LLC, including the fees. Once you register your LLC, you are set. Then, get your id# for sales tax under the name of your LLC. If you get one now, you will have to get another after you do the LLC. If you have no employees, you don't need an EIN from the IRS. If you incorporate, you will have to do articles of incorporation, board members, stock, etc., etc.

As for business license, you can probably find that out on the SOS website as well. Many states do not require business licenses. However, some municipalities do. You should also check for any local requirements for businesses, including local sales tax, since that may require an additional id# and quarterly or annual filing.

Great...thanks for all the replies. LLC seems like the way to go.....I already signed up for a sales tax id # under my name though, I was getting real close to the quarterly deadline. It was easy & I'm sure I can request another one under a business name.
