    A7V880 Sound problem solved

    Hi,

Finally i solved the annoying popping-crackling sound problem of on board soundmax codec of A7v880.

Sound codec used in A7v880 is AD 1888. I searched over Asus site and found out that Asus p4u800-x uses the same codec. However driver version of this motherboard was newer (But date was older, interesting). Latest drivers of A7v880 and P4u800-x were version 5.12.01.3663, dated 7/15/2003 and version 5.12.01.4520, dated 04/19/2004 respectively.

I downloaded the P4u800-x driver and tried to install but installer refused to install. I found out that it was because of the different Vendor and PCI ids in the .inf file. I changed the inf file with original from A7V880 cd and tried again. This time successfully installed. I've been using this driver for couple of days and i have no popping crackling soudn any more.

    To use this driver:
-Download P4u800-x Soundmax driver version 5.12.01.4520 from the link below.
    http://www.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/s...0-x/ad1888.zip
    -Extract it to a folder
-Replace smwdmAL3.inf file in \smaxwdm\W2K_XP with the smwdmVI3.inf in original A7V880 cd
    -Install it using Setup.exe

    That's all.

Modifying pci and vendor ids and some other settings in smwdmAL3.inf should work too but i didn't have much time to do it.

Send the toads at ASUS an email.

    Nice work!!!

Senor will probably put this one in the A7V880 sticky once he sees it.

    Re: A7V880 Sound problem solved

    Thank you very much.

It seems that only smwdm.sys is different in both driver sets. Other files were exactly the same (some were dated exactly 4 hours later but everything else was the same). I think without patching and installing driver set again it is possible to solve problem too. Just replacing the original smwdm.sys with the one coming from the driver version 5.12.01.4520 in safe mode will be enough.
Maybe we should upload this smwdm.sys to somewhere. No need to download whole package.

its too bad this probably doesn't fix the same exact problem with any other pci soundcard though .. or does it?

No, this is specifically for the onboard. It will depend upon what the particular cards drivers do with the PCI latency settings, how well they share irq's etc. You may want to look at the excellent Guide in the Audio Corner sticky:
