I think you'd be better off just deciding what components you want and asking for that system. The main reason is warranty. Another reason is cost. It certainly would be cheaper to buy a pre-made laptop..

If you are doing it for fun, though, then it can be done, yes! Some parts are getting quite modular in laptops. RAM, HDD, to name a few. Processor can also be upgraded relatively easy, IF you know you're way around most major laptop cases. The other stuff you might have a hard time with. The motherboards come in many different forms and factors. Getting some tech manuals would be a good way to start learning how to custom build a laptop.

I think you could, but there are several limiting factors like chassis size or battery compatability with the motherboard that would make it difficult. Also, going through a company is fairly cheap and you have a warranty(as mentioned).
I remember reading on Slashdot an article aboutt his very thing. Seems some company is producing laptop kits so you can buy just what you want. Can't remember who they were for the life of me though...
