What integration are you talking about? I haven't even attempted to set up X on a Gentoo box yet. Haven't needed to yet. But I'm planing on trying it out after Christmas when things start to slow down.

I did find it annoying how FC always wanted you to choose Gnome. That was a pain. It's so easy to change the default desktop manager within Mandrake. It's what ever you choose last.

RedHat/FC has the 'bluecurve' theme that really simplifies the differences between the two desktops, and there are some other tools written specifically for kde or gnome. and SP, I kinda need X- I want this to be my main box

I know both Mandrake, and FC are 'user friendly, precompiled products.' But let's face it. The kernel source is needed alot in Linux. I was amazed at how easy it was to compile the kernel in Gentoo. Mind you it would / should be the same in FC, Mdk, and others too.
There is source available for the kernel for fedora, just not as an easy to install "binary" rpm package. It's now only available as a src.rpm file. You either have to download the source CDs and get it from them or download the kernel<version>.src.rpm file directly of the fedora ftp servers. So you can't select it to install at install time and explaining to novices how to expand the kernel source tree from a src.rpm file is great fun Of course you can also use the vanilla source from kernel.org

I guess they just figured that anyone who was competent enough to play with the kernel source wouldn't mind doing it the old fashioned way, plus it free's up a load of space for other packages on the binary CD ISO's. The kernel package was kind of unique, being the only binary rpm package to not actualy contain any binaries, but actually contain only source code.

    Merry christmas

I am sooooo stoked! after messing with Fedora Cores 2 and 3, I finally gave up and tried Debian. Took me a while, but I got KDE up and running and got the xserver to accept a 1280x1024 res. spent 8 hours trying to compile a 2.6.8 kernel from debian sources, and was having major problems with the initrd. gave up on that, and in an hour had compiled and succesfuly installed a 2.6.9 kernel, which gave me sound drivers. I had one objective finished: audio player. now on to DvD. should be simple, right? wrong. tried xine, xine via totem, and ogle, and didn't get audio on any of them. finally made some mods to my ogle config file to run the ALSA driver with device 1 instead of the default 0. I'd like to change the default, except I don't have the global or user config files for alsa (~/.asound.conf or /etc/asound.conf). but hey, it works. I'm happy. /*dexter's voice*/ Successsss! /*end Dexter's voice*/

    Re: The Penguin Bar

Christmas is great. I finally got some more RAM for my linux pc, a new mouse (I was using a ball mouse), and a new keyboard.

On a side note, Does anyone have a Tungsten E palm that they sync on their linux machine? I need some reccommendations for a good program. I looked at the Palm site and found this:
    http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,CASE=obj(6503)
But I wasn't sure which program to get. I was hoping someone here used one of them and could tell me how they liked it.

KDE has Ksync. never tried it, as I don't have a palm, but thought I'd mention it.

that's just awesome. I think I'll send it to my brother, a game developer for Xbox 'course, now that they've spun off of MS, all their servers are linux, as are a lot of their dev boxes...
