    Dual concern with RAM/video

I'm building my first dualy and I'd appreciate any review I can get on the potential system:

    2 x Opt 242 from newegg - $460
    Tyan Thunder K8W - $430
    2GB Samsung Reg PC3200 - $440 (4 x 512MB)
    BBATI 9800p (already have it)

HD's and case I've already got also but my primary concern is that there will be a problem with the RAM or video card. Will this setup work?

I don't think its been fixed yet, there were definite problems with any ATI video card and the agp chipset used by that board. The ram should be fine.

http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_cont...nderk8w&page=4 It said that there were a few things that still needed to be ironed out, but they were still using a 9800 pro. What was the problem that they were having?

    Re: Dual concern with RAM/video

Originally it was just about every problem you could imagine. Lots of bsod, lots of boot failures, driver loading failures, distorted images, you name it. I was more up on this a year ago when specing out my opteron system. The VIA and nVidia chipsets didn't have the problems.

If you're serious about that mb and that card I'd take a look at 2cpu.com threads on that board and decide if its been fixed to your satisfaction.

Or buy the Iwill DK8N, or the MSI Master2 FAR, instead of the Tyan board.

    I wonder what AireWolve decided....

Well, the 9800p will stay for now even though linux support is poor.

Are there any benefits of going with the nForce3 250 over the AMD8000 chipset?

I can't speak for the 9800, but my system is running the 9600XT AIW card with no problems. This is on a Thunder K8W with two 242's and 4X512MB ram.

    Re: Dual concern with RAM/video

After looking at the benchmarks comparing the Thunder K8W & MSI K8T Master2-FAR and speaking to another developer who'd use it, I've decided to go with the MSI board. With support for DDR400, USB2.0, and a price tag half of the Thunder K8W, we think that we can do without pci-x.

My only concern is again with the agp slot. It's so dang close to cpu2's slot and clearance measurement said that an FX cleared it but I'm going to use a BB ATI 9800p with a Zalman ZM80C-HP (with the fan). Will it clear?

    Re: Dual concern with RAM/video

I'm looking at the specs from our site here. I agree, that AGP slot doesn't leave much room for a HSF on cpu2...especially if you are planning on using the heatpipe on your 9800. I wonder if the actual MSI site has a larger pic - even so you're going to be guessing unless somebody actually has the board and can measure for you.

At MSI's site there's a larger pic. My guess is that you wouldn't be able to use the Zalmon.

It also states that the board supports PC-2700 for Opterons and PC-3200 for FX processors (since those were the official specs).

Large picture - I think your right about the zalman cooler not fitting, from the looks of it.

    From their site:
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p...2_FAR&class=mb - like you said specifically states "For Single AMD® Athlon-64 FX 51 series, it will support Registered Memory up to DDR 400 & For Single or Dual AMD® Opteron Series, it will support Registered Memory up to DDR 333".

From their same site (dif domain):
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...il.php?UID=484 - says nothing about it. In fact the pdf manual is only for opterons but stills states that DDR400 is supported.
