what does DDR2 have that DDR doesnt?

it really just seems like it's got more pins and higher speeds.. but at the expense of higher latency.. seems like all they did was overclock ddr1 and loosen the timings. i know that it must be much more complicated than this, so could someone please explain the advantage of ddr2?

The voltage and power characteristics are different. Not sure exactly what the specs are but I am sure you can look them up at JEDEC.
    AMD Athlon64 3200+ (Winchester 0431)
    Thermalright XP90, Thermaltake 92mm SilentCat
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (BIOS 1.4)
    2x512mb Crucial Ballistix PC4000
    Albatron GeForce 6800GT 256mb
    OCZ Powerstream520
    Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120gb 8mb cache
    Seagate Barracuda IV 60gb
    Pioneer DVR 108 (BIOS 1.18)
    Coolermaster Centurion V
    Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 Value
WinXP Pro SP2, NForce Driver 6.14 (w/IDE driver)

Re: what does DDR2 have that DDR doesnt?

think of ddr1 and ddr2 like the northwoods and prescotts. the northwood maxed out in terms of CPU frequency so a new smaller core was needed. the prescotts came out and allows future high frequency scaling, but it sucked in the beginning. heat was an issue. the extra longer pipes backfired and slowed down gaming performance.

ddr1 has reached its limits. it can't scale any higher. ddr2 is brought on and will replace ddr1 in the future, especially when amd starts to use it next year. it sucks right now, but there are cases where extreme overclockers have run it as low as 2-2-2. when it starts to be able to run 3-3-3 as a standard, this thing will be mighty fast

that's through overclocking. JEDEC only officially approves of 5ns chips. anything beyond 200MHZ is through overclocking. and yes a couple of years down the road we will have memory at 1GHZ. ddr2 is capable of reaching about 750MHZ now.

more like its time for DDR3, damn, if it wasnt so expensive though.

no, i think its because of the higher latencies of ddr2. At 400 mhz it cant keep the same tight timings as ddr1.

Re: what does DDR2 have that DDR doesnt?

ddr2 carries twice the load than ddr1, so theoretically speaking, it should run about the same performance when comparing ddr2 at 200mhz 4-4-4-12 and ddr1 200mhz 2-2-2-6. but theoretical is never right, at least not with computers. ddr1 is definitely faster with the lower latencies. right now, ddr2 sucks pure ass. like i said before, when ddr2 has 3-3-3 as the standard timings instead of the crap right now, it'll start owning.

it's only expensive cuz there's no high demand. since no one's really hopping on the crap intel lga775 platform, selling ddr2 for cheap prices will make absolutely no profits. it's only with the few that refuse to go amd who splurge for ddr2

Re: what does DDR2 have that DDR doesnt?

Corsair has ddr2 thats rated for 3-3-3-8 timings and I think OCZ or somebody has some 2.5 CAS rated ddr2 coming out soon, can't remember who exactly.

Its just the next step in progression, a new standard needed to be implemented before ddr1 totaly peaks, which would leave processors and motherboards outpacing memory in development.

i just wish AMD would hurry themselves up and get ddr2 out there.. i dont want to have to do 2 relatively expensive upgrades one after the other
