    Help Installing Serial Drive

Hi All: Just purchased a new barebones system from Monarch Computer today. I ordered a Seagate 120 GB (Serial ATA150) from work (@ no charge!) My question is not the physical installations, that I can handle. It's more when I'm installing Windows XP Pro, are the questions I have.

I have installed XP before when I reformatted 98SE & then installed WINXP Pro. That was my older WD IDE (ATA100) drive. I've been poking around & it seems like you have to install the serial driver before you install Windows XP? Is this correct? How do you install a driver before installing an OS? Let me give you a quick overview of my specs.

Asus AV8 Deluxe (ver. 2.0) VIA KT800 Pro Chipset
    AMD Athlon 64 3500 (90nm) Winchester Core

Should I been D/L this driver from Via first?

    http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2

Or does Seagate provide me with one. I should mention that the Seagate drive I'm receiving will be "Retail" & not OEM.

Could anyone give me a quick breakdown as what to do? Seems like this will be the toughest part, considering installing a Teac CD-RW & Floppy Drive should be cake.

I would appreciate someone giving this "lightweight" some insight.

Oh..I should have mentioned, I'm only going to use "one" HD. No Raid.

    Regards,

    Alex

I don't run windoze-xp but if memory serves, you have to hit F6 at a certain point to install the SATA driver. I may be wrong, might only be for RAID. Hang in there and the guys will help you get it going.

    Re: Help Installing Serial Drive

Yes you have to supply the drivers for the Sata Controller(VIA?) during the installation. You will start the installation as you normally would with just the Sata drive and a Optical and your Floppy drive attached. You then should see something like this.

    1. Create a floppy containing the sata controller drivers.

    2. At the beginning of the operating system setup, press F6
to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.

    3. When prompted, select 'S' to Specify Additional Device.

    4. When prompted, insert the floppy disk you created and
    press enter.

The drivers you posted should be fine. The setup of the Floppy is important with the VIA drivers there will be a Readme file that will give you the layout of the Disk. The older Driver Floppy sets up different the the latest Drivers. Here is an example of the readme file and the structure of the Floppy.
    Code:
    7) Install Operating System into SATA HDD of VT8237

        2. Install Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, or Server 2003

            * Copy all files and directories of DriverDisk\SATA folder to a floppy disk. Make sure
following directories and files are copied into floppy disk.

          A:\
            \2003IA32
                 VIAsraid.inf
                 VIAsraid.sys
                 VIAsraid.cat
            \Win2000
                 VIAsraid.inf
                 VIAsraid.sys
                 VIAsraid.cat
            \Winnt40
                 VIAsraid.inf
                 VIAsraid.sys
            \WinXP
                 VIAsraid.inf
                 VIAsraid.sys
                 VIAsraid.cat
            Txtsetup.oem
            VT8237

           * Boot system from OS installing CD-ROM.

           * Make sure VT6420 BIOS is executed by the system BIOS when POST.

           * Press "F6" when OS installer starts running.

           * Insert floppy disk.

           * Choose the OS device driver wanted for loading.

           * Install OS.
This I believe is for the newer drivers you should double check the Readme File for the Drivers you download just to be sure.

    Re: Help Installing Serial Drive

Themortorman: Many thanks for the quicky reply. Now...I forgot to mention that I'm only installing "one" HD. When I look in VIA there's two sperate drivers:

One is: Discrete Serial ATA Raid Controllers VT6420/1

The other is: VT8237 Intergrated Serial ATA Raid Contoller

Which one should I D/L? Also, in the installation instructions under these drivers, they keep refering to 2 HD's. I'm already confused.

You want the VT8237 Intergrated Serial ATA Raid Contoller Drivers. Sorry but where are you reading the 2 HDs maybe I can see better what you are talking about. Though you should not have any problem running 1 Drive on the Board. We have seen a few have problems with some boards not being able to run 1 Sata drive on the VIA controller no reports that I know on this board.

    Re: Help Installing Serial Drive

themortorman: Why would ther be an issue on the Asus AV8 Deluxe with installations of just one HD?

To answer your question...Click on the link I provided in my original post.

    2nd: Click on WindowsXP

    3rd: Click on IDE,RAID & SATA

4th: Click on the VT8237 Intergrated Serial ATA Raid Controller.

    5th: Look down (just a little) & the ytalking about installations i.e. Option 1 & 2.

They BOTH refer to 2 HD's in the installation instructions. I appreciate you helping me out! Really do.

    Re: Help Installing Serial Drive

Really just browsed that page some sorry. But basiclly they are assuming you want to install a Raid array which is not necessary the controller can operate Drives in a non-Raid mode also.

Edit: If you need alittle more info on this try the ASUS forum in the Sticky. Senor Panadero and CMB have quite the informative Sticky going over there. There is a section on the A8V and the K8V will have alot on setting up on the VIA controller.

    Re: Help Installing Serial Drive

themortorman: Ok...Then I'll just go by your instructions. It won't "prompt" me for RAID O, 1 etc.? This seems easy enough.

Thanks a bunch! You're are SUPER helpful! Thanks so much for taking the time. God...This is one great website! Great people.

No nothing will come up about setting up Raid. You can enter the VIA Bios but you won't be able to do much with one Drive.

    Re: Help Installing Serial Drive

themortorman: Hey...Can't D/L that driver...It's 6.51 MB large. Simply too big for a diskette. Any ideas? Maybe this driver from the Asus website:

    http://usa.asus.com/support/download...28.zip~zaqwedc

I D/L it & looked at the readme file. It's calling it a miniport driver. Copy & paste from the README file of the driver.

    Re: Help Installing Serial Drive

There's more to the folder then Drivers. The Drivers will be in a Folder.

    Code:
    7) Install Operating System into SATA HDD of VT8237

        2. Install Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, or Server 2003

            * Copy all files and directories of DriverDisk\SATA folder to a floppy disk. Make sure
following directories and files are copied into floppy disk.

          A:\
            \2003IA32
                 VIAsraid.inf
                 VIAsraid.sys
                 VIAsraid.cat
            \Win2000
                 VIAsraid.inf
                 VIAsraid.sys
                 VIAsraid.cat
            \Winnt40
                 VIAsraid.inf
                 VIAsraid.sys
            \WinXP
                 VIAsraid.inf
                 VIAsraid.sys
                 VIAsraid.cat
            Txtsetup.oem
            VT8237

           * Boot system from OS installing CD-ROM.

           * Make sure VT6420 BIOS is executed by the system BIOS when POST.

           * Press "F6" when OS installer starts running.

           * Insert floppy disk.

           * Choose the OS device driver wanted for loading.

           * Install OS.
    Promise SATA378 Driver Diskette *
This is for the Promise Controller the Board has 2 Sata controllers on it.

The Driver will be on the ASUS installation Disk though I recommend trying one of the newer Drivers.

    Re: Help Installing Serial Drive

themortorman: Ok...I understand now. Just one more thing....Notice the file on this copy & paste. It's not calling for (example) VIAsraid.inf etc. Meaning "s" after VIA. Like you mentioned in your previous posts. It's looking for VIAmriad. See the "m" after VIA. Is this ok? Maybe a different version from your MB?Take a peek:

    2. Install Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, or Server 2003

    * Copy all files and directories from the DriverDisk folder to a floppy disk.
Make sure the following directories and files are copied into the floppy disk.

Ok sorry I copied that from an older set of Drivers. Thats why I mentioned to check the Readme file for the Drivers you have downloaded.
    Code:
        2. Install Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, or Server 2003

                     VIAmraid.inf
                     VIAmraid.sys
                     VIAmraid.cat
            Txtsetup.oem

            * Boot system from OS installing CD-ROM.

            * Install OS.

            * Run setup.exe after OS is installed.
For any reason these Drivers give you any problem try the VIA drivers off the ASUS site and just remember the Readme file will tell you just what needs to be on the floppy disk.
