    computer crashed after ram installation

i need some help here. I recently just sold a set of memory modules since they were not compatible with my computer. They were purchased as new, so i know there is nothing wrong with them. The buyer recieved it, installed them, and his computer crashed. There were 3 of them that he purchased. They were the 128 mb 600mhz samsung memory. From what i know, it is physically impossible for ram to crash a computer. What could he have done wrong?, i would like to help him. I have emailed him and asked him for specifications on what type of computer he has, his memory , speed and soo on. so i will be back.

Is there any way of testing if the modules have been damaged?

    Thanks,
    Joanne

Re: computer crashed after ram installation

OK this is what he wrote:

    Computer: Dell 8100 1.3 mhz P4 processor 128 rdram - 2 x 64 NEC brand MC-4R64CPE6C-653 non-ecc 600-53 100 (600 Mhz)

When installed, during boot it reported memory change, then having to reduce available memory to be able to boot, then Windows failed, safe start was offered but still didn't run. After a couple of reboots it acted like it was cycling, trying to restart Winders repeatedly. This failed too. Tried leaving the new memory in and adding the old, no help. So I took the new memory out and went back with the old only. It reported the memory change but Winders was in total disarray and no other programs worked. I looked for system restore and it was non-functional. I then reinstalled Windows XP which took care of that problem but every program was defunct. Norton, Excell, Word, Works, Real player, everything is non-functional. They are reloading easily, though and my files seem to be intact. Catastrophic crash, but I don't know why. Worked fine before.

Of course RAM can cause crashes. If its defective of course, thats why you have to test with memtest86.

I may be wrong, but with RAMBUS don't you have to install pairs or use a terminator or something like that? You could try an Intel forum somewhere as AMD has never used RAMBUS memory and someone might know.

If you send me the make and model of the guy's computer, and the Samsung part number of the memory, I will look them up to verify compatibility.

Re: computer crashed after ram installation

The Dell Dimension 8100 1.3GHz requires the memory to be installed in matching pairs. Normally the larger size memory needs to be the first pair.
The 8100 takes up to four 512MB modules (in two banks of two pairs)
It looks like that first part number is a 64MB module.
It could be that your buyer is mixing one 64MB with three 128MBs, or is installing the 64MBs in the first pair of slots.
Has your buyer tried two of the 128MB modules as the first pair and put the two CRIMMs (that come with the 8100) in the last tow slots, so he can test one pair at a time?

Also, he may need to do a BIOS upgrade to see the 128MB RIMMs properly.
