    Cool The Raptor Discussion Thread!

I was thinking of getting a 36Gb Raptor, will I notice the speed increase? Is it worth the money? Is it quiet? How much heat does it put out?
The 2 most important things are speed and noise, I want my computer to be like a big block chevy, with all that power on tap... just waiting for me to unleash it. Is it gonna be fast as F#ck without loads of noise?
    Constructive critism welcome, trolls not.
    Thanks.

I doubt you'll realise any difference in performance between the two raptors outside of a benchmark.

Oh yes, definately. The raptor's utterly superior access time will make the machine feel more responsive, quicker overall. You won't need a benchmark to feel it.

I've heard people say Raptors are noisy.
I have not found this to be tru with either my 36G or 74G used as a single drive or in a RAID 0 array. Knowing the speed of you rigs, I would have to say a Raptor is perfect for it.

they are not that noisy compared to 7200rpm drives.. but are fast.. you will notice a slight increase in vibration in your case due to the 10k spin..

Just got me 2 36gigers. 107 for 2 shipped. great deal, and has 4 and a half years warranty left on them. cant wait to get them.
My DFI should come soon so I'm gonna run them in RAID0 on the nVidia RAID controller and have my maxtor as the storage. w00t.

I have installed or owned at leat 9 Raptors. And noise was never a problem. I would recomend the WD locking Sata cables. I have lost 2 drives because of the connector on the HD getting hot and breaking off.

Yeah def. I bought a slightly used 36GB raptor and def notice a performance increase. INfact, i just reinstalled Windows. With a clean system, sufficient memory and processing power, a raptor helps eliminate performance bottlenecking when accessing your info on the hard drive. Also, your machine boots and shutsdown superfast, which makes rebooting alot lesss annoying. For example, as i said i just reinstalled windows, and of course installing new programs and tweaking requires rebooting alot, with the raptor it seems like I blink and I am ready to work within wiindows again.

    Go for it.

I picked up a 74gb raptor and definitely noticed the boot/ load time difference. It is fairly loud though but not annoyingly loud..
