    cache vs operating frequency

I plan on upgrading my system in the next couple of months.
    Current system:

    amd xp 2800+
    asus A7N8X Deluxe
    Corsair (xms) pc3200 512mb x2
    ati aiw 9600xt

I am at getting a new mother board and cpu. I want to pay <$400.00.

I surf the web, do a little gaming (Age of Empires), and watch tv. In other words no hard core gaming. Which would be the most bang for the buck?
    A amd Athlon 64 3400+, with 512 L2 cache and a 2.4GHz
    operating frequency
    or an
    athlon 64 3400+ 2.2GHz with 1MB L2 cache.
    I do not over clock.
Any information and opinions would be appreciated.

the extra cache does about 200mhz extra on A64. If you overclock the 1Mb L2 to 2.4Ghz you will have a FX-55, but you must get a 939 motherboard and cpu.

Why an 939 over a 754? Would I have to invest in ecc memory?

    Thanks

the fx-55 runs at 2.6 ghz while the amd fx-53 at 2.4 ghz

joe: socket 939 doesnt need registered memory, your confusing it with socket 940. Socket 939 just adds dual-memory support.
