    There are P4s, and then there are P4's

    I had a general question about some P4 processors and chipsets. I am thinking about building a new PC for video editing/general purpose. I have a friend offering to sell me a P4 1.8 processor on a Intel i850 chipset.

    Am I better off buying a complete new PC (example: P4 2.4gh pro with 845 chipset mobo) or is the i850 and P4 1.8 pro good enough for what I need? I am not doing heavy editing, but having 1 pc editing while doing other stuff on a second is a big plus to why I am thinking about getting a second one.

    But the i850 uses old RAMBUS ram chips, and the socket (believe 423?) is obselete, plus it is slower (but with a computer that's free, time isn't a big concern for me)

    Bottom line: Am I a fool to consiter an i850 chipset and P4 1.8 for editing or is it a good idea (consitering the cost is much lower for P4 1.8 than brand new)?

    The P4 1.8 complete system is about $325 (P4, mobo, 256RAMBUS, 20g hd, case, etc.)

    But the P4 2.4 system core components (mobo, ram, cpu, and case) are plus $400

    If its a intel board I'd have to think about it as they're locked down pretty tight but if its a aftermarket board maker I'd seriously consider it. The last time I looked the going rate on 423 cpus is about 150+ for a 1.8 on ebay. Make sure its a socket 423 also. If its socket 478 you have a lot more upgrade options. 325 is still alot for a system that old when you can walk in to BB and get a emachines that with a newer cel D would probably beat the pants off the 1.8 for not much more money. I would have to say I wouldn't give more than 250 for it which is about what all the components are worth that you listed. Overall no your not a fool I just wouldn't pay that much.

    amd sempron 2600+ + motherboard (at frys) = $80
    512 mb pc3200 = $80
    fx 5200 = $40(mir)
    80 gig hdd = $55
    case + psu = $50
    burner = $65 (or $30 for dvd-rom/cd-rw)

    total = $370 or $335

    did I miss anything? plus this system woops the ass out of your friends 1.8.

    Thanks, this is really helped. I think I am going to go with another system instead of this one (not a big fan of P4 anyway). Thanks for your input.
