    PCI Express question.

OK....I been out of the computer game for a minute now.Gotta question for you guys.

My buddy just got a Gateway 702GE for christmas. It has onboard video and of course now we want to throw a vid card in this beast and play some games. So I have him go buy a 9600XT and I uninstall his onboard video drivers and disable it in the BIOS...pop open his case and there's no AGP slot for the card.

So from looking at his computers specks from Gateway.com,under "expansion slots" it says he has 3 PCI slots, and 1 PCI-E x1: and also lists another PCI-E x16: 1 .There's a slot(which I'm assuming is PCI-E) above the 3 PCI slots.....does this look like like PCI-Express?

    And if it is,what are the differences in PCI-E x1 and PCI-E x16: 1?

x1 is really short. Graphics cards use the x16 slot(s).

Yeah. The PCI_E 16x slot is also has 16 times the bandwidth.

    Re: PCI Express question.

OK...I don't know anything about PCI Express....so I guess he has a mainboard that uses this apparently.Any tips on good cards for under $200?I haven't kept track of which cards are good and which ones are the notorious crap cards like the ATI SE cards or Nvidia MX series...

    Re: PCI Express question.

    Much obliged on the recommendations.

My buddy is e-mailing tech support tonight(he better be..lol) just to clarify that his mainboard DOES do PCI Express......but from the specks,it looks like a go.I forgot to run Aida32 on his system..that would have clued me in,but he lives right behind me so I'll pop over tommarow and check it out just to be sure. Thanks for the help!
