Wire Trick To Fix Cold Boot Issue? HELP!

Hey tried running my system at 215.x10.5 yesterday, and the system went to a cold boot stage. i am pretty sure its because the CPU is not getting enough voltage at boot time.

I read that you could place 2, 5mm U shaped wires in the SOCKET, to default the CPU to 1.8/1.85V at boot time. I think this will solve my problem.

BUT I NEED A DIAGRAM OR A HOW TO. CAN ANYONE HELP? THANK YOU!

Forces your CPU to post with 166/200MHz FSB rather than a 133/166MHz FSB.
Really only useful on aXP and aXP-M chips, since Barton cores are already higher.

The one wire your looking for is the red one. It defaults the Mobile chips to 1.775v. Which in turn "cures" the cold boot problem.

Right, you want to do the vcore trick to increase the voltage to 1.775v, not anything higher than that. The L12 mod is not needed on these boards, as the ROMsip table already uses 200 MHz CPU settings. However, by using the L12 mod you may get an extra multiplier out of you overclock (like going from 12 x 200 to 12.5 x 200). RGone... discovered that waaaaaaaaaay back...

Re: Wire Trick To Fix Cold Boot Issue? HELP!

i did the wire trick..and stilll no boot. . tried every single thing. i dont believe it. JUST because i didnt put the voltage high enough in the bios this thing is not starting and the BIOS seems warped no ..damnit.

i ended up buying an 87n8x-e. well i should be happy that i have a stable board, but are you kidding me it tops out at 1.75 Vcore. So I am only able to get 205x11.5 and it will boot otherwise no boot ...

There's always a voltage mod somewhere to fix that!

Your bios voltage doesn't kick until Post. That is the whole point of the wire(WAR) mod. Your CPU starts at what the CPU defines it's voltage at. Then at Post the bios sets teh voltage. For example...you mod for 1.775vC and set your bios to 1.65. When you turn on your rig your CPU gets 1.775 until the moment it posts when you bios sets it to 1.65. The low voltage mobile were often undervolted in the beginning and this "trick" was used to get us into our bios. Another trick that often worked waas to power on to nothing(cold boot) and then hold the reset button for a 5 count and badda bing badda boom. Postie baby. Your problem does sound like a fubared bios so hotflash your chip and let us know whats up. As always...Good Luck

Re: Wire Trick To Fix Cold Boot Issue? HELP!

I really appreciate all of your guys' help in this matter.

I do like my ASUS board (for stability reasons) but it seems that my DFI has more options and more room for overclocking. So I would like to get that board up and running (again).

I tried the wire mod trick to try to get the system to boot up with 1.75 Volts but that did not do the trick...

Now, how do I hot flash my Bios for my DFI Board? (sorry n00b question)

once again thanks for all your help

To hot flash a BIOS, you basicly need another motherboard like the one you have that works (or a mobo with the same BIOS type, etc). With the working board off, remove the BIOS chip and then reseat it slightly, so it's barely making contact with the socket. Boot the board with that BIOS, then go into your flash program. Remove the working BIOS (with a chip removal tool or some dental floss or thread wrapped around the chip before you reseated it) then insert the non-working BIOS chip into the working board's socket. Continue the flash program and add the new BIOS to the non-working chip.

I'd leave the wire mod in place just in case, but if you get the board to boot you might look at adjusting the AGP voltage to 1.6v, and I'd read throught the FAQ as much as you can. These boards are very picky, but when they work, they rock.

Re: Wire Trick To Fix Cold Boot Issue? HELP!

ok, here's a quick hotflash lesson. to someone that's never done it this sounds way worse than it actually is

carefully (the socket may crack or chip easily) remove the bios chip from the dead dfi. NOTE the orientation of the chip in the socket for correct reinstallation.

prepare a dos boot disk and a disk with awdflash.exe and the dfi bios you wish to flash to. (can usually be on the same floppy)

start the asus with your boot disk and once you're at the command prompt carefully remove the bios chip from the running board (again note the orientation)

    insert the dfi bios chip and run awdflash xxxx.bin /py /sn /Wb /QI /F
if that fails : awdflash xxxx.bin /tiny (xxxx being the bios name)
