Re: Linux Forum Links
Linux Distro's
What is a Distro
A Linux distro (or distribution) is simply the Linux kernel packaged together with a set of other useful linux software. A modern Linux distro typically comes on one or more CDs (or DVDs) and is downloaded as an ISO image to be burned to a CD (or DVD) and contains a selection of modern applications covering everything for internet tools such as web browsers and e-mail applications, a full office suit of applications right through to server software. The main deviation from this is the recent introduction of Linux LiveCD's, such as knoppix, that are bootable Linux CD's that allow the user to boot and run Linux purely from the CD without having to install the OS onto their hard disk.
Which distro should I use
We quite simply can't answer that. There are so many different distro's aimed at so many different target users and none of us are able to try them all, and we all have our own personal favorites that you may or may not like. We can give some generic advice though. Generally, LiveCD distro's are ideal for first time users who just wish to quickly try out Linux for the first time and get a feel for it as they do not require installing to your hard disk. There are many, but knoppix is probably the best well known, has good hardware detection and good support so is an excellent place to start. Next up are the main class of distro's, which you should progress on to when you're ready to try an install (dual boot or stand alone); the more popular distro's are listed below. Gentoo Linux is probably the main exception in that it's design goal is to provide a totally customizable system but the install process is for more advanced users. If you really want to jump straight in at the deep end then Gentoo won't disappoint you. The best advice is to try a few, but when choosing try to consider factors such as it's intended target users, intended usage and availability of help (yes, you will need help at some point).
