    Re: way to go guys...

One day there's a thread asking "What's it gonna take" to stop the suicide bombings in Iraq, then a few days later there's one condemning Coalition forces for shooting at a vehicle that's speeding towards a checkpoint with no indication it's going to stop.

    How droll.

Is this event unfortunate? Extremely so. An embarassment? To whom?

    http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/...ain/index.html

Sgrena's partner said he could not fault the U.S. soldiers, telling Reuters they were probably "scared boys," and the blame lay with those who had sent them to Iraq.

But CNN's Alessio Vinci reported that Saturday's Il Manifesto newspaper had accused U.S. forces of "assassinating" Calipari.
I hope she has a speedy and complete recovery.

Well youd surely suppose there would have been some communication detail worked out prior."Hey soldiers...were leaving right now....we have the freed journalist onboard...so keep an eye out for us...well be at checkpoint 132 if 28 minutes"..."well be in a 1998 Celica..metallic blue"
Did any of that happen? Or in the rush and excitement were those details neglected?

    It IS a warzone afterall.

"Another victim of an absurd war," said Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, leader of the Green Party

That just summerized what i was about to say.

It's an unfortunate non-issue that only means something to those who desire to define it. Personally, I found it interesting at best. An anomaly.

It certainly isn't an embarrassment to the US. I would have shot them too! It's war over there and when you see a car speeding towards you that very well might be loaded with explosives not stopping what would you do? The whole thing makes no sense anyway. Why would the Italians be flying through a checkpoint like that anyway? Why wouldn't they have just stopped? Ah well, I guess they were just driving like Italians .

I agree with what some have said about the war being absurd, but the actions of both sides involved in this acident were understandable. The italians probably let their guard down, thinking that the worst was behind them and failed to consider the possible danger of not making there intentions explicitly clear, ahead of time, to the US forces they were heading toward. The troops that fired on the car where probably jumpy and understably so. If the report of what happened is acurate, I can see myself doing the exact same thing if I was in their position. I would not have taken the chance of that being a suicide bomber trying to ram me with a giant vehicular bomb. If my life was on the line day in and day out, I would defiantly be shooting first and asking questions later.

In all probability this is just an unfourtunate accident and nothing more. Wasn't the first and won't be the last.

The reporter took the risk... and unfortunately he got shot.
