    Free anti-virus software besides AVG?

Anyone know of a decient anti-virus software besides AVG? I had AVG on my computer and it would not receive the updates. I uninstalled the program, deleted any folders left in explore, ran a reg mech., then restarted the computer. I attempted to reload AVG but it said there was an active program on the computer when there wasn't. Maybe I missed something. I want to put a program on and if it won't accept AVG, what else could I use? Thanks for the help.

Im not sure what the exact error you are seeing is but if you want to make sure that the old AVG was completely removed you should run regedit (Start->Run->regedit).

    In regedit navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

If any of the following folders are there delete them:

    Avg7Alrt
    Avg7Core
    Avg7RsNT
    Avg7RsW
    Avg7UpdSvc
    AvgTdi

    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and remove:
    AVG7_CC
    AVG7_EMC

    Reboot and try reinstalling again.

Well, the member recommended links are missing two free AV Programs (besides AVG):

    Avast! -- http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home2.html

    AntiVir -- http://www.free-av.com/

AntiVir PE use the less system resource (thanks to it's win95-ish interface).

Who care for a pretty antivirus anyway? We just need the protection ain't we?

If the subscription is dead, just uninstall it. It's not doing any good at all and it can interfere with other AV programs. Still uses clock cycles too. Just the performance issue alone is enough reason to can it.

isn't until nav2003 you could uninstall and then reinstall to 'renew' the subsricption?

    Yup, sometimes that works.

Symantec is trying to patch all of those loopholes. I don't think you can install a 2003 version anymore and get any subscription time. I've seen weird things happen sometimes though.

Avast has not let me down yet.

I also use (in case anybody is interested )

Winpatrol (for catching spyware trying to edit your startup)
A"squared" (for Trojans and the like)
Spybot (That'll be for spyware then )
Spambully (anti spam, works well for me)
Barrett M82A1 (For those spammers that just DON'T get the message)
