    ATI Theater 550 Pro card

Someone pointed out a *MAJOR* difference with the ATI Theater 550 card and the Hauppauge PVR cards.

The Hauppauge cards have a great picture quality which is slightly better than the ATI card but there is one major difference with the ATI 550.

The Hauppauge card is an ANALOG tuner.
The Theater 550 is a DIGITAL tuner.

As we all know, analog tuning tends to drift over time just like old TV's with the fine tuning dials. I myself have run into a known "0" MB recording bug using BeyondTV causing me to lose the show I tried to record.

According to this other user, he has yet to experience this problem using the ATI 550.

I'm close to getting another capture card and I'll give this a serious second look.

How is the compatibility with BTV, Sage, etc? That was always the downfall of the AIW cards in my opinion.

He's using this with Beyond TV. I'm assuming this will work with Sage TV as well but don't quote me on that.

As long as someone else is willing to be the guinea pig here, I'm happy to watch. I still have several E-Home tuner cards I need to get rid of....not compatible with MCE to date!

How does the price compare DD?

Re: ATI Theater 550 Pro card

anandtech did a tuner roundup recently, they rated TV Wonder Elite (the Theater 550 card being discussed here) as the best SDTV tuner on the market, with the only drawbacks being crappy software (no Multimedia Center support) and high price.

550 pro card is MCE supported and I believe beyondTV and Sage both recently added support as well, but don't quote me on that.

Re: ATI Theater 550 Pro card

sorry maybe i should have been more clear

550 PRO *IS* supported by Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE)

but it is *NOT* supported by ATI's own Multimedia Center software (MMC)

If you're using MCE, you don't need MMC

Re: ATI Theater 550 Pro card

The ATI Theater 550 can be found as low as $70.00 per card (Sapphire ATI). When the card first came out, I wasn't impressed with what I saw. The driver for it wasn't very mature but I've read a lot of reviews on this card and how well this card is working *NOW* and I'm curious to find out for myself.

From what I have been seeing from other reviews, this card doesn't drop frames (digital, makes sense) like the Hauppauge cards.

I really love the Hauppauge cards but looks like these drivers for the ATI 550 have won a lot of users over.

It bears watching as we may hopefully see a working ATI chipset motherboard someday.

Lots of good comments on this card...Some comments started out bad but got better once the drivers were ironed out.

Still I'm also getting mixed reviews here-

    Here we go...

I'm going to be your guinea pig. I just ordered a Sapphire Theatrix 550 card and I'm going to see how well it compares to my Hauppauge PVR-150.

I'll try to do a nice write up of my experiences- good or bad w/photos.
