I just installed ForeSight which I seem to like Ok. Truthfully I really havent made the move from WinXP yet as I seem to be there about 75% of the time.
I have tried quite a few different Distros including the Major Ones. None of them has been as convienent as XP.
Maybe Ubuntu comes close as far as installing new programs. But drivers
especially Graphics I still find problematical.
But at least using a Linux Distro to roam the porno sites is usually worry
free. That's when I really appreciate it.

I have been running SuSe 9.0 pro on my laptop every since it was released . Installed it as a dual boot with XP , after using it for about 2 months I wiped the harddrive and its been linux only every since . My main box is running Mandrake 10.0 and Xandros with XP .
I going to give Ubuntu a try on both before long .

Still Debian. At the beginning of this thread I was still testing distros. I have gone through most of the main ones by now, and can say that I have found my home with Debian. I just love the ease of installing pacakges, the humongus repositories, and the ability to upgrade seamlessly.

Re: What distro do you all use?

It is strange being here... I have tried Linux many times .... never stick with it ... I have had Mandrakes in the 7's and 8's and now have 9.2 on my Laptop because Win ME locked up and I cant find the darn code to reload it.

I have had Red Hat and Suse and Lycoris. I have Suse 9.0 around here some where too.

I do not care to learn software, my brain is full and it is hard to sift thru all the terminology and crap. Every Distro wants to create a new term for installation and a new way to install stuff.

I think the distro installs are easy, I think using any distro is easy if you know how. I'm lucky to be able to use windows.... (I was so dead in the water with DOS that I stayed with Commodore 64's and 128's well into the 90's)

I don't think GenToo is for me.... I want a OS that tells me when its time to eat or go to the bathroom... I need lots of help and I have NO spare Brainpower.

I guess Mandrake is better than Win 95 .....

Besides have you ever noticed how ugly looking Linux users are?

Okay Okay just Kidding! (Homely might be a better word)

Couldn't agree with you more here... I've found that installing is fine for most people. I have a couple friends who could install Linux fine. Granted, one had some issues with installing Gentoo, but he did it in the end.

The question at the end of the day comes to using it. Anyone can install it.. but my friends didn't stick with it. After installing it, they went back into Windows and let their Linux partitions collect dust. Using Linux is the next step from installing it IMO.

Anyways. Personally, I'm using Gentoo as my distribution of choice. My first mainstream distro was Debian. I love Gentoo for Portage. Also, I've grown so accustomed to its way of doing things that I don't feel like moving out of it. (Eg, the run level system is different from other distros).

And Portage is really great. (But I think I mentioned that already).

Plus, the community is great. The forums are very active, so it's easy to get focused and relavent support.

I recently tried Core Linux on another computer... it's nice and small.. but.. not small enough. Can anyone recommend a Linux distro that will fit in a about 280MB along with Apache, PHP, MySQL and OpenSSH? Core Linux fits nicely.. but after installing OpenSSH, I only have some 40MB left I think.... Not going to be enough for the rest.

PandaZ3, I was having that same feeling when trying to get Solaris10 to connect to the
Internet. A simple DHCP that Linux can do with it's eyes closed. The commands are different and I just didnt want to get into it. So I wiped it and installed Vida Linux. But in
the process I did learn a bit more about DHCP and it's configuration files. Linux is still a major challenge for me and so I am still enthusiastic about it. For the most part I use WinXP though it doesnt have aisle riot solitare but now has Tux Racer.

Still Ubuntu for me, since Debian redid their repositories, it borked my Mepis distro (using Gnome) and then having problems with the new Debian sarge, I went with Ubuntu.

Gentoo on my desktop (still, not likely to change), Ubuntu on my laptop (switched from Gentoo), and Slackware on my server
