Here's the link for the free upgrade to 64 bit Pro....if you meet the criteria, http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/6...e/default.mspx and then here's a pretty good list for compatible hardware and software

Linux has a 64bit O/S? And why would any of you guys want to run win64? To house a data warehouse or run games with many gigs of memory?

The Linux kernel have supported AMD64 since the CPU was released. That I can allready do If you're a geeker/tweeker like me you just have to try things out, in this case it just reassured me that I've made the right OS choise a long time ago

Id really like to know when will 64 bit become a standard, like when will we all REQUIRE it.
Cause as soon as its a requierment, those of us with 32 bit processors will need to upgrade,I just got my CPU a while back and I really dont want to go and have to buy another CPU this year,my barton is pretty powerfull and I want it to last me.

That may be, but for everyone on this board "mandatory" is going to be within 2 years if you still own a 32-bit only processor.

I'm honestly surprised the marketing departments for AMD/Intel/Microsoft and every other major software vendor are not picking up on this. 64-bit could be used as a huge tool to get everyone to upgrade everything computer wise.

Anyone know of a list of what applications are getting the upgrades for 64-bit from their developers? I haven't heard of much.

    Re: WinXP x64 official release

I have an Athlon 64 and WinXP Pro. Will upgrading to 64 provide me with better performance in games in general or does a game have to be specifically designed to take advantage of 64 bit?

    What about non-gaming applications?

You only get a performance improvement with 64 bit games and applications. MS promises that 32 bit stuff will perform similarly to how they do now on WinXP.

If only that were true. It is probably due to lack of good driver support but games seem to run significantly slower on xp64 than regular xp. If driver support picks up this could all change though.

Are there even any games (or apps) out now that take advantage of 64 bit? What kind of performance gains can we expect to see?

The driver issue is the reason I'm not going to touch XP64 for at least several months possibly longer. I don't have the time to be messing around with getting things to work.
