... and I want to install it on my AMD64 system, but the full drive is occupied by Ubuntu, can I use qtparted to resize the biggest partiton to allocate space for Gentoo?

if you use ext3 or resier you should be able to do so.
Just make sure you backup important files first.

Just make sure you do it with a liveCD (partition not mounted) and after a fsck of the drive free of errors.

Provicemo, do you think that would work for me? I've got two partitions on a drive and the first partition is too small but I've got tonnes of space on the second partition. Would I be able to shorten the second partition without losing any data by moving it's start point hence providing more room for the first partition to grow?

It should work, but I still say safety first and backup your data and fsck the drive clean of errors.

No problem there. Tape backups are in full affect.

But still, this is a job for a rainy Saterday, just in case.
