if you use ext3 or resier you should be able to do so.
Just make sure you backup important files first.
Just make sure you do it with a liveCD (partition not mounted) and after a fsck of the drive free of errors.

Provicemo, do you think that would work for me? I've got two partitions on a drive and the first partition is too small but I've got tonnes of space on the second partition. Would I be able to shorten the second partition without losing any data by moving it's start point hence providing more room for the first partition to grow?
It should work, but I still say safety first and backup your data and fsck the drive clean of errors.

No problem there. Tape backups are in full affect.
But still, this is a job for a rainy Saterday, just in case.
