"mini-computer" programmer here too (until I retired in 1998) so if you're older than dirt, I'm older than the rocks under the dirt

As to Mr. Bill (Gates that is)..I pray for the day that Linux gets it's total act together and the world finally understands the true meaning of "open source" not what MS thinks it should be (an open source to your wallet).

Hehe I like Microsofts products for the most part, they are no different than any other company. All software companies (except maybe tiny ones) use the same tactics to get their products on top and keep them on top. And Microsoft is no different of course.

Don't think so Sword, they can be a bit ruthless.

But nothing beats the Microsoft technique, even if you have no chance on winning a lawsuit keep them in court. Eventually they run out of money, or my favourite.

If software company x has compteting software, buy out local disk manufacturer and reallocate assets to leave competitor high and dry (For further reference it dosen't mean that they didn't give some disks, just enough not to meet minium sales requirements).

You know we can delve deep and dark into every major software companies past and find some questionable shit. That's how they all got to be where they are today. With Microshaft it's alot easier to do however because they are so big. Problem is when a company gets that big and successful everybody hates them.

I think some people would like to say malicous things about him because they disapprove of Microsoft. I've never met Mr. Gates but I'd certainly like to shake his hand. I have no complaints toward Microsoft or their products. I use 3 of their OS's, their webbrowser, and office suite and couldn't be more pleased.

I'm entitled to this opinion just as you are yours.

Microsoft made computers extremely user friendly with their Windows software, but their business ethics and practices of squashing out the competition by whatever means necessary, are at the bottom of the barrel. That is why I have lost total respect for Bill Gates, and that is why the Department of Justice had to act. Microsoft brought it upon themselves with their business practices.

If µ$ wanted to they could have done the same thorough job Apple does by defining bit's and pieces (I know they are not perfect, but if my memory serves me right Microsoft did do the first OS for the Mac and the Atari so it's strange that their own products should be different).

But if you don't and people can't be certain if it's the OS or the program/driver at fault you can always convince people to buy a bug fix as a new version Win 95, 98, SE, ME .....

I think Microsoft is shooting themselves in the foot on this whole product registration deal however. It sounds like it's going to be a pain in the ass to do it. Especially if your the kind of person who installs stuff alot. I think they are laying the groundwork for Linux to take off. The future probably will be open source.....

Question Maybee thats just their intention.

Her the plan as I see it

1.First destroy all interest in µ$ products(check aim partly achieved, but right on track!)

2.tell everyone you are therefor forced to develop/support Linux now to maintain the company :

    3. then tell everyone to pitte all personal that will have to be fired to save the company

    4. Rename it to Linux-Soft

My issue isn't with how shifty the business practices are. It has more to do with how companies "on top" tend to get lazy with product quality.

Microsoft is getting real sloppy with their products, and combined with the shifty business practices they are pushing quality programming under the rug.
