I just need a few easy fixes.

I just need a few Internet connection fixes for my back-up computer.

    --~'~--

Before I begin though, ill just put the specs for it up so that the info I receive is correct:
    • Pentium 75 MHz
    • 40 MB ram
    • Windows 95
    • IE 5
    • New US Robotics 56k modem
    • McAfee Virus Scan 6.0 - no subscription

If you’re / / / about the specs, I just use this computer for a back up for searching for fixes/putting stuff on floppies/misc. I don’t use this as a general-purpose comp

    --~'~--

Now to the meat of the matter:
First, the connection speed is limited to 28.8 kbs. Is there a way to get this up to 40 kbs or more?

Second is that I can't do anything on the Internet unless I set the firewall to allow all. Obviously this is a problem. What programs are required to be set as trusted programs?

Now here is a question that is more general, where could I buy a copy of windows 98se so that I can run newer programs.

There once was a man whose name was . He was a fellow and would run around with computers all day. But one day he was running, tripped, and broke a computer. He was then very .He was also because everyone was watching him. His boss came out and was quite . Thought he was going to be fired but to his he wasnt fired but just had to give up a month's pay to pay for the broken computer. He was then because he wasnt fired.

I must admit I was at the spec.

Check out Ebay for Win 98SE. The modem speed may be a driver issue.

You don't say which firewall you're using, but there should be a way to get it to request your permission when a program is wanting internet access. There are also various free firewalls like Zone Alarm which work with Win 98SE.

well, the brand of the computer is AT&T, so its a stable build. as for the driver, i think win 95 only supported speeds up to 28.8 kbs, i think.

the firewall is just the same one that came with McAfee that is built into it, i dont know what i have to "allow" to access the internet, all i have for "allowed" is the ie.

oh just a little thing, i posted the thread with that comp.

95 allowed for 56k modems, however you modem may not be a 56k part, I'd check it first.

Well, if it's a 56k either your phone lines have gotten worse, or you need to get a hold of some better drivers for that modem, though I have seen modems deteriorate for no good reason over time, the generally go down to 28.8 and settle there.

Who made the modem, I work for a small isp and we do encounter certain modems that just plain don't work well with our cisco box (mainly intel ambients).

Might check your isp and see if they have a brand they prefer, unless it's a large isp they probably have a preffered brand.

the modem is a US Robotics 1801 (i believe) and i tested it on a diffrent computer and it reached 45 kbs. so there is no problem with the isp, though I am searching ebay for windows 98 se upgrade.

I was looking at ram for the computer and man, its expensive. the ram is paired so i would have to get 2 sticks at a time. the only one is a 32 kb, and i have 6 slots and each stick is $50. so i would have to deal out $300 for brand new sticks to fill it up.

Finaly does anyone know how to overclock that old of a processor. ive located the little blue box with the 3 white switches, and the properties for each. Can I have help because i dont want to destroy the processor.

NO, i don't suppose you would have a prob with a usr modem. There is one setting in 95/98 machines that may be of use to you. Unfortunatly I haven't used 95 in awhile. So your gonna have to look for it, and my guess is it's already set at it's highest rate.

Go to control panel -> modems -> and choose properties -> change the maximum speed to the highest available 112200 i believe. It may be that for some reason your is set to a lower rate.

    Where to begin....

Win95 requires winsock 1.4 to play nicely with networking in general, the 40 megs of ram leaves little in the way for running anti-virus or a firewall app. Besides with dialup networking, a firewall is more of a nusiance then a requirement.

One big point is that neither win98 or win95 are supported any more, new apps are not being made on the normal retail market for either product.

Make sure only tcp/ip is bound to the dialup adapter. ( Also make login to network is unchecked.)

As for the port speed thats dependant on the UART chip on the modem or if attached by serial port the serial ports UART.

If you have time and some patience, you might want to look at linux instead.
