What temp should the Nvidia 4 chipset run at?

    Hi All,

I put together my first 64 bit system a few weeks ago with an Asus A8N-E Mobo.

The chipset fan has already gone dead. I did call Asus and then are sending me a new fan.

However, in the meantime I put a Zalman heatsink and placed a small fan running at 4000RPMs to blow on the heatsink.

The temp runs between 135f - 140f according to my Antec Probe which I placed in the heatsink.

I am wondering if this is too hot and what temp it runs with the crappy little 9000 RPM Asus fan?

    Any feedback would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Dean

    Welcome dean2900,

That is hot but not unusually hot for chipsets.

BTW, normally we speak about these temperatures in Celsius. Have to drag out the conversion utility when someone posts Fahrenheit.

Ok, it is running around 60C normally

I just want to make sure this thing isnt a fire hazard without the fan!

Mine is running at 40c and I think that's really high. If you are running at 60c, I would definately get a cooler for it, and some Arctic Silver thermal epoxy to bond it to the chipset.
    Detailed Specs:
    Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Cooled by the Thermalright XP-90C Heatsink and a Vantec Tornado 92mm Fan

The fan that came with my a8n-sli gave up pretty fast also. But after some testing i found that i didnt need a fan. Just got a passive coolant on it instead, and its around 32 C idle, and 35 C when computer is full load so the gfx-card gives off 70-80 C. Cpu is around 40 C idle and 45 C max load.
Chassi only got one 120mm fan at the rear and one 120mm at the front. Plus an P4 side air-intake with a little tube that ens just above the fan for the cpu. Works nicely and not that much noise. The gfxcard gives off most noise in the wait for a new fan there

The Zalman heatsink does not feel that hot to me. I have the two Antec Probes stuck in between the heat sinks ridges. I am wondering if the probe is actually giving an accurate temp reading.

I did receive the new Asus Fan today via mail. I am probably going to put that on to see if it truly was re-engineered. The computer is actually not quieter without the chipset fan probably because of the 10k SATA boot drive, the Power Supply, and the fans on the PCI Express graphics card.

I just hate to have to take the whole PC apart again just to replace a defective fan.

I put in the new Asus fan. I am not even sure this is the right fan since it goes it at a different angle.

However, it has been running for about 1 1/2 hours and the temp has not gotten any higher than 49C and is seems to like to stay around 41C for the most part. The new fan runs at 5000 RPMs instead of 9000 like the old one.
