Using Wireless Laptop as XBOX Wireless Adapter

I have a DLink Di624 Router and have a desktop and laptop running wireless with no problems. Tried to hook up a Dlink gaming adapter for use with my son's Xbox. Drove me crazy and could not get it to work . Before I try again or RMA it....

Can I use the wireless laptop as a network connection for the Xbox by running Ethernet cable from laptop to Xbox? How would I set up the network connection both on the laptop and the Xbox?
Also, can I hook up another PC to the laptop (when not using the XBox) and use it to connect to the Internet?

I know than basics of networking but am fuzzy. I have a mental block. Have built two PC's more easily than setting up the wireless connections!

I suppose you could enable internet connection sharing on the laptop.

Set the wireless adapter as your source to the internet

Set the ethernet to be the one that does the sharing

connect it to the xbox or another pc with a crossover cable

But thats a really ugly set up

Cable Modem-----DI -624 Router-----over the air to a laptop-------ethernet cable to the Xbox

This is what I was trying to describe. Other than a laptop is bigger than a GWL-820 gaming adapter why is it any uglier?

Also, I'll have to read about why a crossover vs. regular cable

It's uglier because of the ICS component. I guess the Xbox and router must be separated by some distance so that you don't wish to use a cable to interconnect the two?

Of course, now that I think of it, he could bridge the two connections on the laptop and do away with the ICS portion - the Xbox would get an IP address directly from the router - instant end of ugliness. It would still be alot to ask of a wireless connection, though - serving both the laptop and Xbox for gaming.

    zinfandel,
Optimally, I would recommend getting the router and Xbox in the same room and using a wired connection.

If he has WinXP then he can use a network bridge instead of ICS.

Re: Using Wireless Laptop as XBOX Wireless Adapter

    Hi !
Wir haben das gleiche Problem !! Wir versuchen 2 Xboxen über einen Laptop als WLAN-Gateway für eine xbox zu verwenden. Funktioniert leider nur in Teilen. Hier erstmal das Setup:

    Internetgateway(Dell PC/Linux) <--> D-Link DI-624 ---> Kabel zur Xbox 1
---> WLAN zum Laptop --> interne LAN-Karte zur Xbox 2.

Re: Using Wireless Laptop as XBOX Wireless Adapter

    Oh sorry... of course.. english...

We have the same Problem in our House. We have a D-Link DI-624 in the gound of our building which connects ous via a cable to a Linux-Internet-Firewall. The internal network is set to 192.168.115.0/24. At the hub is one xBox connected by cable. The other xBox we want to connect via a cable to a laptop which redirects the networktraffic from the LAN to the WLAN-Router and the internel Network. I thik everthing should work if we get the xBox 2 into the same network as the xbox1. There is the Problem. If we tell the LAN-Adapter of the Network that he has an 192.168.115.0/24 Adress, nothing will work anymore ! If we put the LAN-Adapter and xbox into another subnet (192.168.116.0/24) it works partially with the XP-Network-Bridge. In a System-Link-Game we see the game created by the other, but a join is not possible. After a Timeout there is a Error which says that this game is not available or full.

Does anybody now the answer ???

Re: Using Wireless Laptop as XBOX Wireless Adapter

Why not have the DI-624 be a DHCP server and bridge the wireless and wired adaptor in the laptop? Doing so lets the 2nd Xbox get its IP address directly from the router. Both Xboxes are on the same subnet and the problem becomes, if anything, a port forwarding problem.

Re: Using Wireless Laptop as XBOX Wireless Adapter

To let the xBox get the IP from DHCP was my first try. It didn't work. Ip always was 0.0.0.0. The DHCP ist coming from the Linux-Gateway. Yesterday I tried to reconfigure the Networksettings with my laptop and my xbox (cause my neighbour wasn't at home). After i've installed XBConnect and bridging the LAN and wireless, everything worked fine. Xbox and LAN-Adapter were successfully setup into the same lan. Maybe we have a local Neighbours-Laptop-Problem ;-) We will try to figure out what was wrong.

    It works with my machines.

Re: Using Wireless Laptop as XBOX Wireless Adapter

    Hello again !

We finally managed to become the two xboxes into the same subnet (192.168.115.xxx). I am able to ping evey xbox from the wireless laptops. Even xbFTP from box to box works. After finding out that the networkbridge should not be configured by dhcp (resulted in an ip conflict with xbox) we also managed to let the xbox2 (via wireless laptop) configure itself by dhcp. Everything seem's fine ...

    BUT

Starting Forza Multiplayer - same Effect !

We see the game the other one created but if anyone of us tries to join the game .. error after timeout: "The game you tried to join is not available or full!"

With xBConnect v5,0 each one of us can play with other people over Inet and system-link. If we try to join a Game the other one of us hosts xBConnect tries to connect and time-out's... To other Games which other People hosts it works fine. Maybe XBConnect has a Problem with the same IP Adress of us two which it get's from the linux-gateway. But I think in the internal LAN it MUST work (somehow) without Problems even without XBConnect.

What is wrong ? I'm totally out of mind... please

    Thanks a Lot..

I do think it's a problem of port forwarding. Unfortunately, I don't have one Xbox, much less two, in order to do some testing...
