Ok I understand that part. Repair install appears not to be an option here.

I'm thinking of something here but, we need to procede with extreme caution. For our main goal is to salvage your data off the old drive, correct?

What happens at this screen does it give you an option to leave this partition as is or, does it state it needs to be formatted?

the other link mentions that the old drive might be too corrupt to even give me the option of repair. how that got to be like that, i'll never know. that screen is what i see, that's it. those are my only options.

Like I mention we should be cautious. What happens if you press enter at that screen?

Might have a look at Test disk.

Installing XP on a partition won't wipe your data, providing you don't format.

That's what I was thinking will it give the option to leave the partition as is or will it demand that it needs to be formatted.

Got a recovery program pointed out to me by a good friend. This one looks like it is a freeware program, what type of functionality you will have I'm not sure hopefully you will have a full working program.

It's asking you to install XP on a specific partition, right?
Can you pick which partition that has the previous install and not the data? If not, just pick the one you want and let it go for it.

I believe that is just a file recovery program. You load it onto another hard drive , and it will try to recover data files etc from a damaged drive. Don't believe it will "fix" the problem drive, but if all else fails.....
    I think it's non-invasive.
