My Purple Ray has the dreaded cap disease!

I would have never discovered this problem had I not SOLD these boards on ebay. They were still running fine in a couple of my "folder" rigs. When I removed them from the machines to get ready to ship, it was then that I noticed...

I loved these boards...can't bear to toss them in the trash!

RIP sl-75drv4 Purple Ray and sl-75frn-l Golden Flame

EDITED: to include the sl-75 frn-l

Although the board is obviously well out of warrantee theres a very good chance that Soltek will send you some new caps for the board. My first DRV2 went down with bad caps and an FRN2-L golden early release. Oddly enough my daughter is still useing an early release FRN-L that is significantly overclocked (1700DLT3C@11.5X200) that has never shown any signs of bad caps. The email addy will be easy to chase up if you're interested it will be in the Caps sticky at the top of the page.

yes you could recap the board , if you dont want to do it your self their is a place that will do it for you www.badcaps.net
I just sent out my beloved NV400 L64 to them for a recap job , Chris (Topcat) just emailed me and said my board is back on its way to Me right now so I keep the forum posted as to how it turned out.
    see this post
    http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=390007

Anyway it seems that during the time most of the socket A boards from Soltek came out that that Soltek did indeed get ahold of some known caps that were on badcaps list of caps that were known to fail

Another option would be to replace the board I know where their is a nice golden flame for sale and a NV400-L64 for sale

Yeah the DRV5 was a really really good board for it's time. ReCapping is pretty easy to do, especially if you have a collection of old boards lying around. All it takes is a soldering iron and a little patience.

using used caps would be a bad idea , IMO If one is going to go thru all the trouble of recapping a board then use new caps . you can get new cap kits from www.badcaps.net
they sell Rubycon caps . Besides trying to reuse caps is a pain the leads are short as opposed to new ones much easier to use new

I've had no problems using old caps, just try to stay away from caps made during a certain period of time. And re-capping is not that time consuming, plus it's cheaper, and I'm cheap.

true used caps are cheeper but how long are those going to last? a month ? 6 months ? a day ?
All caps do have a limited life cycle
How does one know how long the used caps are going to last before they go bad ?
New caps are available and about 20 cents apiece a local radio shack should be able to get them

that is a foolish suggestion , using used parts (nothing personal) but respectfully to each thier own
I have found that anything worth doing is worth doing right .

edit here is a pick of a board that the caps blew and took out other components

Well, I'll be hanging onto this board; it's going to turn into a "yes-I-can" project! Is there a source for finding the spec's on the particular capacitors? It seems I saw referance to such in another thread somewhere on this forum.

Just remember, there are no guarentees... I have fixed three boards that weren't working at all. Then decided to replace caps on a board with only one cap showing bulging but working fine. That board didn'y make it through the surgery..

I'm sure Soltek will help you out, they will replace them with Panasonic or similar Japanese capacitors...they are really good quality caps.

MD, Thanks for the info; I'll be checking that out.

BTW, here's some more bad news- as I was removing my 9700pro that I sold to a friend, I noticed that the capacitors on my SL75FRN-L are also bulging and leaking!!!

These Guys are SCAMMERS, search their posts and it's obvious.
This allegation is totally untrue and I deeply regret making it. I hope all posters here will accept my apology. I'm glad it was basically ignored, as it should have been.
