    2wire dsl modem won't talk!

Hey guys. I just did a clean installation of WinXP, and I want to configure the firewall on this 2wire dsl modem from sbc-yahoo dsl (think it's model 100 or something, it's got a funny, non-stackable shape with 3 lights on the front stacked vertically). However, when I type in any of the following

    gateway.2wire.net
    home
    homeportal
    172.16.0.1

in the address bar (of any browswer), I always see the message "connecting to http://xxxx" or "waiting for response from http://xxxx" in the progress bar. Nothing happens though, eventually the attempt fails and a timeout message is displayed. I have access to the internet, but I can't talk to my modem? I thought, "Maybe zone alarm is the problem", even though I didn't get any message from zone alarm. I disabled it, uninstalled it (completely, all dll files and everything), rebooted, and tried again. Still nothing. Then I thought, "Maybe (the newest) AVG antivirus has a firewall I don't know about." So, I shut it down, and also made sure the windows firewall was turned off, rebooted, and still nothing. Any ideas on this one? Oh yes, the computer is fully up to date with security patches and such, so that shouldn't be the problem either.

    Thanks for your help,
    Matt
