Smile Re: Which Anti Virus Sotware??

I use AntiVir AV. It is free and they update the definition about everyday. It does not take up a lot of memory and quick to scan. About the only down side to it is the download sizes are fairly big about 3 megs. For broadband not much of a problem but for dial up I can see the problem there. I have used several different AV and I like this on the most. My wife has been using AVG for about two years and her computer has been clean for all that time. Both of these are free.

I've heard Avast is one of the best of the freebies

I use bitdefender. It's a darn good virus software and it catches anythign bad that comes along, real-time or by scanning. I know bitdefender is pretty highly rated. A few websites that compares a bunch others shows a comparison of how well it detected and removed/quarantined viruses and BD was one of them at the top. I recommend it.

I think your correct, versatility and configuration wise Avast! is the best AV. You'll need too pay $$ to get better detection.

    Free= Avast!

    Paid for= BitDefender

Detection rates are certainly good with Avast for a free product, and I've heard it's quite friendly in terms of system resources too. Not tried it out yet though, but I might pop it on the next old Win98 machine that comes my way and see how it does.

I've use BitDefender (free) and F-Prot (free) on Linux and have been happy with both, but I've not really used BitDefender on Windows. Kaspersky is still my first choice for Windows.

In an ironic way AVG free edition, I have personally found, has caught and removed more viruses and other security threats then Norton Antivirus, I would recommend using AVG free or pro, then using the battery of online virus scanners I have posted here http://www.wolvenmoon.com/modules.ph...628318dc4f0014 when you need it.

Stay away from mcaffee, and norton. Norton is fine and dandy, but the upgrades expire too fast and the protection is too little for the premium you pay.

Norton used to have relative poor detection rates (~80%), but this has been dramatically improved in more recent releases. However, I still wouldn't recommend it as I believe you can get better products for less if you look elsewhere. But if you've bought it then at least you know you have a relatively good product.

Mcafee has excellent detection rates - second best behind Kaspersky at about 98-99%. I use the comand line scanner and find it misses relatively little. The full home package is known to be a bit of a resource hog (as are many) and there were concerns about the frequency of updates for home users although I believe that has been/is being addressed.

Neither are bad products and both offer better detection rates than you'll get with a free fully featured equivilent product.

Of course there's more to an AV package than just detection rates and that's why all decent AV vendors offer a free trial before you buy

i don't recommend McAfee because of the resource hog reason alone. But it's not a bad detection program, but not among the best; although it's close. It's 4 behind BitDefenser, PC-Cillin and AVG Antivirus Pro. Norton is two behind McAfee in the top ten reviews. http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

For me, I'd rather use something other than McAfee so my pc don't get used up by just one program

Also, check out this website http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/tests.xml?200506. You will have to register there to see their VB100% award. Looks like BitDefender really stepped up the past year and half on their software

Well, there are reviews and there are reviews. I normally go by AV-comparatives:

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/

Here, for example, AVG Pro comes last whereas it comes third in the review you site. Moreover, the top ten review you site doesn't even include Kaspersky in the top ten which is widely regarded as the best scanning engine, period.

Anyway, there really not much point discussing these reviews and where products rank as it's far too easy to manipulate the tests to favour a given product or to misinterpret the results

    Re: Which Anti Virus Sotware??

Probably have to write to them and tell them to review it. They probably just never reviwed it yet. And nothing there I see is manipulative. Just honest reviews. I see nothing that says otherwise. No doubt Kaspersky is good, it also depends on on the version of the virus scanner and when it was reviewed. What you usually do when revieweing these products is have an image with viruses and/or worms on it and re-image it for each test, and re-run test at least 2-3 times for each scanner. Hard to manipulate that. Esp if each test is the same image done 2-3 times for all products. It's all subjective and opinionated.

    My top 5 would be:

    Kapsersky
    BitDefender
    PC-Cillin
    AVG
    McAfee

But then again just my opinion. Not much point in changing the tests anyway, doesn't help the makers of the product to make it any better when it's really not any good.
