Chili and nachos were boss. Got a growler of "Vienna Lager" from Triumph Brewing Co. (local brewpub) and it was really good. Kind of ESB-like, with a hint of that typical Brown Ale flavor (think newcastle). One of O-Dog's lady friends came by and brought a selection of gourmet cheeses, including Stilton, Gouda and one other I can't recall the name of (triple creme, Brie-like but even creamier) since she works at a cheese shop. Watched the game and had a good time. Happy to see the Pack win it

On the menu for tonight:

O-Dog's Special Bistro-Style Burger:
1/3 lb of a home-ground mixture of chuck and ox-tail seasoned with salt and pepper, cooked medium-rare and topped with melted Brie and sauteed onions. Served on a toasted brioche roll with a side of pasta salad and a fresh garden salad.

Chef's Recommended Beer Selection: TBD (probably an ESB)

Sunday night was my sister's last here before going to Greece for a trimester abroad, so we had a nice dinner.

I organized a cheese tasting before dinner:


The cheeses are (starting in the top right corner and going clockwise): A smoked german cheese (like Gouda but softer), Sugarbush Farms Jalapeno and Chipolte Cheddar (self explanatory) , Humboldt Fog (Domestic, goat with an ash line), Brebirousse d'Argental (a brie-like sheep's milk cheese from France) and finally, Cambozola (german cross between the soft and mild camembert the blue gorgonzola) As a whole the tasting was well received and quite interesting.

Dinner was Filet with a mushroom-shallot red-wine cream sauce, mashed potatoes and broccoli

I've never been a big fan of exotic cheeses. I've tried several and all were just meh compared to basic sharp cheddar for me. With the exception of Dubliner which I sampled once at Sam's Club and have been buying ever since. It's my fav now.

I understand why people might not be a huge fan of them. I definitely wasn't into them at all until fairly recently, and theres a ton out there that I don't like at all. The one thing is that with something like a cheddar you can eat a whole bunch of it and not get tired of it because its pretty mild. These cheeses were much more "interesting" flavors and a lot of them were strong or different, so you only eat small bits at a time. That said, I've also done a cheddar tasting comparing cheddar that had been aged anywhere from 2-6 years, and the older cheddars are very sharp and different from your run of the mill cheddar.

I agree about the interesting flavors but interesting doesn't always equal good. I mean I could eat them but they just don't appeal to me much. I guess it's just what you like.

Last night was grilled NY Strip steak, baked potato and creamed spinach. My dad grilled the steaks, seasoned with salt, pepper, and a little bit of fresh rosemary. Perfectly cooked (quite pink!) and juicy as hell. Delicious!
