    Re: VNF4 Ultra with 7800 gtx ?

dude i like the card u got in ur sig. nice card for the $ try the omega drivers if ur getting any perf issues. (use driver cleaner in safe mode first though)

my buddy is testing 7800 cards for his work. nice cards if you can afford them. But unless ur using vhigh res with other settings maxed your not gonna see much of a dif in how games look and feel.
u would be better off getting a nice 2gb ram kit with lower latancy for that rig then getting a 7800 IMHO. windows xp/x64 use alot of memory as to current games alot of perf issues people are having now that they think are video related are acctuly lack of ram.
a buddy of mine is using this in 2 vfn4-u boards at high speeds with rated (or better) timings) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820223032

he also has a set of this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227210
but he said for the price the first ones a better deal.

thats just my feeling my next upgrade is to get 2 or 4gb ram since 1gb just isnt enought anymore

Ive seen the benches and at high resolution with max settings it is worth the upgrade. Yes Im gonna sell my X800 XL for around $220 and pick up a 7800 GTX for $470 bucks! I need it for World of Warcraft and Battlefield 2!!

Edit* Doesnt BF2 work better now with only 1GB? The patched fixed the need for over 1.4gb of useage. Most games dont need over 1gb. If they do its basically bad coding on their part.

    Re: VNF4 Ultra with 7800 gtx ?

in my exp all newer games benifit more from 1.5-2+gb ram then they do from gfx cards in this range.

WoW is ALOT faster on 2gb ram then on 1. same with eq2 and other mmo's. Bf2 as i understand can still use 1.4+gb ram IF its avalable and the perf is better then with less. The patch makes it so the game works better with less ram then it use to but thats it. (got a couple buggys who are bf nuts.......so much so that i lost intrest thanks to them.....)

Your better off with more ram then going to a larger gfx card this is speeking from exp at my buddys house..... a bastage that has 15 comps in his large basement and hosts lans every 2-3 weeks. (i avoid them most times due to my disslike of some of the regulars affinity for keeping 200+gb of prOn on their systems)

for testing he has 2 3400+ systems bouth with x800xl 512mb cards (got them thru work for same price as a 256mb would be oem) one has 4gb ram the other only had 1 when we first tested. other then that they where identical. the 1gb lagged behind in most newer games and some older games. the 4gb was...........well u can imagin. we upgraded the 1gb system with a 2gb kit and the dif was nice (and i got the gig kit that was in it for doing the upgrade for him )

you can see the dif very clearly when a system has more then enough ram then when it has just enough or to little.

as to video cards the best this guy had was a 7800gt and x850xt (also has a 6800ultra 512...dont ask me how he got it but damn) and really the dif over a xl isnt notable at 1600x1200 with 8xaf and 4x aa things are very smooth on the xl in ut2k4,utxmp,u2xmp,tribes:v,kalonline,WoW,eq2,ac2 and other real games we played.

games more and more are using system ram en-mass i have seen some beta games he has that eat up 2gb ram all by them selves(os and other stuff not counted) and these games are ment to use alot of ram. by moving date from your hdd to system ram the game can run faster and access offten used data far faster.

The next EQ(everquest/everqueer) is said to be looking at requiering at least 2gb ram and will reccomend 2.5+gb. in other words u better have 3-4gb if u want best resaults.

i got this ram thinking i would be set for some time to come since i have alwase had more then enought ram when i had 1gb on my last 4 systems. Not its just not enought for a detocated gamer. same as when i had 256mb ram then 512mb games and programs keep using more and more ram just a fact of living in the age we live in.

i pray for the day they start making sdram based hard disks insted of machnical ones. it will be quite a diffrance in perf and probbly reliability as well

    Re: VNF4 Ultra with 7800 gtx ?

seagate had the rushmore drives that where for servers they where sdram based and worked great as swap drives for large database/domain servers but the largest i ever saw was a 32gb fibra chanil one

i know they can make them its getting them to do it thats the problem. i think a flash or sdram drive would be the best option
sdram would need constant power/internal batt (could be done with replaceable 12v batts used for car alarm clickers) but would be faster and wouldnt ware out like curent flash drives can ( i have smoked 4 flash drives so far from over use lol )

hey bob send me one of those addin cards and 4gb ddr to test it with would you :P

if i could manage to get one of them i would just set it as my windows swap file. would be PERFECT. no more worries about swaping even if i push my system ram over limit :P

I think there are significant advances needed, but when someone like MS partners up to give it a boost, it will happen sooner, me thinks.

It's the thinking: "We can't get our OS to load any faster, but with prefetched stored flash memory.....who cares??"
