Question Need help with dial-up and printer server problem...

    Hi guys!

I have a home network set up. I have 2 desktops and 1 laptop at home and I use a print server (Netgear PS110) to share my 2 printers across the network. The problem I have is that my internet connection is a dial-up and whenever I'm connected to the internet, my computer can't print because the print server "cannot be found". However, I can ping the print server.

I've set the print server to on static IP. The desktops and laptop use Windows XP (mix of Home and Pro edition).

When I'm not connected to the internet, I can print without any problem.

Can anyone help me solve this?

    Thanks!

Can any of the other PCs print while you are on the internet?

What static IP did you give to the print server box?

What IP does your computer have?

    Any possible conflicts?

    Hi Spartacus,

The other PCs can print as long as they are not the ones connected via dial-up.
The print server is on 192.168.1.10 and my desktop PC has 192.168.1.95.
As far as I can tell the only conflict that seems to be present is between the dial-up and the local lan.

Which computer has the dial-up modem connected to it?

What software are you using to share the modem? (Windows ICS?)

    Hi Spartacus,

Actually, I'm not sharing the internet connection. I connect each PC invidividually via dial-up when there's a need. My problem seems to be when I'm connected through dial-up, the print server "cannot be found", even by it's own software. The moment I disconnect, no problem connecting to the print server.

    Thanks!

The behavior you describe is the behavior ICS would exhibit. Right click your dialup connection, go to properties->advanced and see if it isn't setup to allow others to share your dialup connection.

    Hi Sick Willie,

I checked the dial-up and the connection sharing is not enabled.

If it's not an ICS problem as Sick Willie suggested it might be, I'm running out of ideas.

I know when you connect with your modem, your dialup adapter will get a new IP address that is a public IP. The NIC card in that computer should still retain it's private 192.168.1.95 IP and should still see the print server.

Do you have any firewall software installed? (like Norton Internet Security)

If so, maybe it's blocking your private network traffic because it sees your untrusted connection to the public IP.

I'm stumped too. I can ping the print server just fine even with the dial up connected but the driver/software just can't seem to find the print server.

I do have Windows' Internet Connection Firewall enabled for the dial-up only. I'll try to disable it and see if it will allow me to connect to the print server.

    Thanks!

    Hi guys,

It's confirmed. The dial-up's Firewall was the cause. I disabled it and I can now connect to the print server.

    Thanks for the help!
