    HOSTS file not blocking access

    Hi folks,

My HOSTS file on one of the machines at work isn't blocking access to blocked sites. It's a WinXP Pro client on a Windows 2K3 server domain. Access isn't blocked when logging on to the local machine nor the domain server.

Anyone have any idea why the local HOSTS file may be being bypassed or isn't working

Are you trying to block access on the client, or are you attempting to block access when the client accesses resources via the server (which is acting as a proxy)? Just need to clarify that first.

Trying to block access on the client. We're not using a proxy

I have the same problem regardless of whether I log onto the domain or only the local machine. It's just bypassing the hosts file.

Or disable lmhosts lookup (makes network browsing faster too) and then the hosts file will work.
