    Need advice

I opened a zip file, sent from what I thought was my wife's e-mail account (I usually check, but didn't this time). Inside the zip was the file "(-).cpl". My virus scanner (Trend 05) is up to date but did not detect anything when the zip was opened, or when a full scan was run. I have not rebooted, is this something that will activate with reboot? I've not seen this ".cpl" before. Found out it is to the control panel is all. Any help would be appreciated.

OK, first we need to establish if the file was infected, then we can work out how to deal with any problems that may result.

Do you still have the zip file (or the extracted .cpl file)? If so, go to Jotti's online virus scanner (below) and submit the file to be tested - takes about 30 seconds, and post back the results here if it's infected (cut and paste the results).

    http://virusscan.jotti.org/

If the file is clean, then you should be fine. If it's infected we can find out some more info on the particular virus to assist in removing it

If it is infected you can always unplug or disconnect from the internet as a precaution until you're ready to deal with it.

OK, looks like a new variant of the Bagle worm. Here's some info on the closest I could find - not 100% sure it's this variant though:

Check for any of the files and registry keys it mentions and delete them. I'd also suggest you download the free version of BitDefender as it detects it and run that over your machine:

EDIT: sttubs - I sent you a PM too
