Re: what uses the PCI Express x1 slot?

I thought the point of pci-express x16 was that it was bi directional allowing for greater bandwidth, yada, yada (8 pipes one way, 8 more the other simultaneously)...so if the other is PCI-express x1 then it would have 1/15 the throughput right? Is that even more than a standard PCI slot?

    Pci-e x1 firewire cards.
    http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...mp&dcaid=17194

    Pci-e x1 sata controller cards.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815150064

    Pci-e x1 Gigabit ethernet cards.

And the previously mentioned matrox graphics card.

I assume there will be pci-e x1 sound cards and tuner cards eventually.
But the stuff's so expensive now.

PCI-e x1 slots are basically "upgraded" PCI slots. PCI bus usually runs @ 33 MHz. PCI-e I believe runs at 100 MHz.

Re: what uses the PCI Express x1 slot?

Well, that's the thing with PCI-E x1 slots... 99.99% of hardware that uses PCI bus don't need PCI-E speeds. Until/unless they find means to use all that speed, it's quite useless... I can only think of SATA controllers and such ... but mobo usually has them already.

What about gigabit LAN cards? I thought most PCI cards don't run full speed because of PCI bus limitations. Seems like PCI-E would solve that although most boards with PCI-E have gigabit LAN already.

Re: what uses the PCI Express x1 slot?

Also the pci bus is a shared one way bus, when the hard drive is clicking, nothing else can get through. that is the main reason it is being abandoned. Fifteen years is a long time in the pc world. It wasn't long ago 10MB was the network standard. There still is no reason for abandoning the AGP bus, but the writing is on the wall and they needed the board space for the lines. The pci bus on the other hand has been a bottle neck for a while.
