Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could point me to some videos on applying thermal paste to an Athlon 64. I've seen the vids on the AMD website but they only cover Athlon XP's. I wanna get a good idea of how much thermal paste to apply and how thin I have to spread it etc.

Don't "spread" anything. One small glob in the center of the IHS, smaller than a grain of rice, and slap on the heat sink as straight and evenly as possible. Several slight swists once the heat sink is clipped on and you're done. If you separate the heat sink from the CPU for any reason after applying the goop, it must be completely removed and start over.

Also I'll probably be getting Gigabyte G-Power Pro Cooler to go on the Athlon 64 3500 I'm hoping to get soon I've read quite a few reviews of the G-Power and it sounds very impressive - possibly the best AirCooler to date?

That's what I do. Takes a while with modern P4/Athlon heat spreaders, but I'd rather have paste between the entire heatspreader & heatsink than a tiny dot in the centre.

That's the worst thing you can do on large IHS chips. Doing so creates air bubbles. Use only the recommended method.

that's what i did too enmore, but i'm new to a64's, i guess i wasted a good bit of as5 huh?

i'll try the other way sometime and see if that helps or hurts.

LOL, I WISH I could leave a CPU alone for that long.

I've testes this several times with the IHS and without it. A small drop in the center produces the best effects, assuming you are able to drop the sink onto it straight and level so that the drop is spread out evenly. You DO NOT want too much goop on there, it makes for less cooling, and air bubbles are very bad. Without the IHS on, it's less critical, but one small drop still does the trick.

sure'd be easier than trying in vein to spread as5, that stuff is like roofing tar...now that's an idea for thermal compound...perhaps...

I used Arctic Silver Ceramique, which is also pretty sticky.

Spreading that white stuff with a credit card made me feel like a total YUPPIE.
