Windows XP freezes at splash screen

Today I was attempting to burn a DVD and my writing app froze up. I attempted a restart and now XP hangs during the splash.

I can load safe mode with no problems, but no matter what I have tried, it still hangs.

Here is what I have attempted so far:

    Loading from a restore point
    Disabling sound card
    Uninstalled vid driver
    Disabled all startup apps

I am at a loss now. Im assuming its a driver issue since I have no problem in safe mode, but I have no more ideas on how to locate the problem.

Any help or ideas are much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Did you remove the failed DVD from the drive?

    Just a thought:

Does your bios check for cdrom boot before HDD ?
You could change it if thats the case to boot from hdd first.

Re: Windows XP freezes at splash screen

help!!! i have a similar problem. My computer began restarting randomly at first. About two days later would take long after the win xp splash screen and the screen would flicker a couple of times during that wait (flicker like when u change resolutions). Now it rarely passes the splash screen and when it does by the time i hit the start button or open my computer it restarts and im back to square one. I tried reinstalling windows on my other hard drive and one week later the same problem occured. But it boots perfectly in safe mode. I really dont now what next step to take. Someone please help me!!!!

    Thanx in advance.

For starters, right click My Computer and click Properties, click the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button, uncheck "Automatically Restart". The next time it reboots, you should have a blue screen with information pertaining to the cause of the reboot. Give us that info. Also, give us a list of all you components that you used to build you're computer (assuming you built it you're self). Most importantly, the PSU, memory (manufacturer, size and speed), CPU and motherboard. How old is the computer, what are you're temps and voltages in the BIOS? Also, some of the moderators might remind you that you should have started you're own thread (no biggy to me). And lastly, welcome to the AMDMB forums!!............
