9npa+ caught on fire. why? help! Pics..

I would hardly consider myself a newb but I think I made a fatal mistake. I connected my Armor case's front USB and Hardcano 13 to MB USB headers. When I powered up the machine, a chip on the board became red hot then a small flame. I shut it down right away. I wasn't able to reproduce the heat with various wiring combos. I wanted to know how it happened...what the heck it was already fried. The machine still worked but USB function was flakey. Keyboard seemed to work OK but NO usb mouse would work on any port. Long story short, I ran out & snagged a DFI NF4 Ultra MB and although this MB gets great reviews, I've had a real hard time getting the same clock & stabilty I was able to get easily with the Epox. I'm dumping the DFI and getting another 9NPA+ BUT I'd like to know what happened here cause I don't need a PC that spontaniously combusts. Is this common with incorrect wiring to USB headers? I have heard of bad wiring frying devices but this is new. Please take a look at the burned chip & help me make sense of this.

    TIA

Was it possible that you had Vcc and Ground reversed when you connected the USB headers?

yep, it's entirely possible Not the 1st time I've jumbled those connections. Usually, the USB ports don't work OR may fry a device that's plugged into it. It would seem more likely that it was the Hardcano (fan controller/card reader) because it has molex power going to it. Anyone with this MB please look at the chip in question & see if it has anything printed on it.

Yup, seen a MSI go poof when the USB headers were connected wrong. Better than killing a $300 digicam I guess.
