    NVIDIA's newest GeForce 6800 GS

The embargo has been lifted on NVIDIA's newest graphics card but it isn't the 512MB 7800 GTX as many have been anticipating. Instead it's the GeForce 6800 GS, a card meant to put an end to ATI's X1600 series before it even begins

I haven't owned an Nvidia card since the Geforce2 Ultra but they have really come out swinging with these cards.

They also released the 6600 DDR2 with an MSRP of $119.

They have just about all possible market segments convered from the looks of it.

I just got mine installed last night, and I must say, I'm impressed.

I was sorta pissed at Nvidia for the dog of a 5700FX I bought a couple of months ago...there is no reason to even SELL this card...it's performance is truly miserable. One of the few really bad hardware decisions I've made lately.

Anyway, I was looking for a $200 card, and after reading the preview at HardOCP, I made up my mind to try nVidia again. I'm very happy with the performance, but I don't have any real way to quantify it in terms of benchmarks. I d/led the Battlefield 2 demo, and it runs at 1024x768 with AA set to 4 absolutely buttery smooth. Dawn of War with all detail set to max runs incredible, and looks fantastic.

I should have two 6800GS's for my SLI rig by next week. We shall see what kind of performance these will grab. Although 12 pipes versus the GT's 16 pipes, it's core speed of 425MHz versus the GT's 350 brings it right up to the same. Also, the fact that they easily overclock to 500MHz and beyond is looking very nice.

    BFG 7950GT OC @ 600/1600 - 160GB Seagate SATA2 - 3 x 300GB Seagate SATA1 - Enermax Whisper II 535w

Have you guys seen the reviews? Some show the core with the marking "6800-GTS", it's possible these were supposed to be higher clocking GT's, but they disabled the extra pipes. Has anyone tried to unlock pipes with Riva on these cards?

I don't see any unlockable pipes or vertex shaders on my card.

Without a doubt XFX 6800 GS 485 MHz core and 1100 MHz memory is the best mainstream card that we tested so far. The whole of Geforce 6800 GS generation is beating ATI's upcoming X1600XT cards clocked at 590 MHz core and 1400 MHz memory and what ATI needs now is the card with 256 bit memory interface.

As far as we know RV530 has 128 bit memory controller and ATI can not do anything about it fast. XFX 6800 GS is faster in every single scenario, it's available now for €249 in €uroland, $249 in USA and Ł176.50 in the island of UK. All the prices include VAT or taxes of course. For the price you will get a hell fast card that can actually even be overclocked to higher speeds, it won't cost you a fortune and will let you play all upcoming games at nice speeds. It’s a great price for a great card. µ
