Please state what make and model motherboard you have, as I believe this problem will be more efficiently addressed in the appropriate motherboard forum, or perhaps the Tech Talk forum.

Dell 700m. not sure about any more details. it's a tiny laptop from dell. I love it, but I cant even use it when the mouse is going everywhere!

Let's see what they have to say over in the Small Form Factor/Home Theater PC/Mobile forum.

A couple of things come to mind. If it's dirty or greasy, it may not work properly. Try cleaning it. If the light in the room is dim, that can have an effect. Could also be using more resources than it needs and might be bogging down. Open Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and click on the Processes tab, then click twice on the header for CPU to sort the processes by CPU usage and see if anything's going nuts when you use the touchpad.

Let us know how that goes..

I know that Dell Latitude 610's suffered from bad touchpads/pointing sticks (Synaptics I believe). The fix was to scream at dell and they replaced the keyboard.
Also try to update the drivers for the touchpad and if the laptop also has a pointing stick in the keyboard, try disabling this in the properties.

The jumping around is usually caused by static electricity that builds up if either you move or the laptop is shifted on the surface it rests on.

You can also check to make sure the cable is seated properly to the connector. I've had laptops come thru the store where the cable has worked its way off slightly and the mouse would slowly walk its way to the side of the screen. Best "•••• you" Buys geeks squad told the customer his screen was going out and he needed a new laptop.
