No video, long beeps, and error code 0.4. on AV8

I posted this in tech talk first, but it now seems like it might be a mobo problem.

Like most days I leave my MCE PC on while I go to work I got home about 6:30, I turned on my screen and the system was frozen at 4:32. I hit restart and the system doesn't start up I try it again and the same thing happens.

No screen, at least 15 long beeps. I opened it up and disconnected the hard drives and read the bios led.
God, I hope my data is OK

My error code is 0.4. and I can't find anything on it.
But I added a new HD with the last few days and everything has ben going OK.
Basically the system is as you see it in my sig with another sata HD.

Any ideas what it could be?

0.4 is supposed to be a memory initialisation problem (either board or gfx).
It has however been seen on several models of ABIT board when the board has been warped/flexed due to an overtightened hsf or non-standard backplate.

Question Re: No video, long beeps, and error code 0.4. on AV8

The VIA chipset does not like 4 sticks of memory.
Remove all them and then install one stick into slot one.
Remove the video card and reinstall it making sure it is all the way into the slot.
Be sure you attach the power supply lead to the video card.
Remove all PCI cards, and power on the system.
Does the system post and boot like normal?

If it does post and boot like it should, install another stick of memory into slot two.
Retest to see if the system boots like it should.
If you think you must have more than 1 gb of memory.
I would recommend you get two sticks of 1gb each.

If the system does not post and boot like it should.
You may have defective memory, or memory that is not compatable with the AV8.

Did all that and still didn't work.

I hope it is only the ram. Sadl,y I'll have to wait until tomorrow to get some. Nowhere in this town do they sell ram. Wouldn't you know that at work we had a sale on it that ended Sunday.

I hope that's all it is.

The AV8 is one of the most picky board on memory and powersupply of any.

The odd thing is that it was working with that ram for months and that PSU for about a month.

I would recommend flashing the bios to the latest then replacing the memory.
This would prevent any farther problems.

How would I flash the bios if I can't get a boot screen?

    My system has no floppy.

Could you borrow a floppy from a friend?
This way you could flash wihout a screen.
All you would need to do would be type "ATIFLASH -P 0 -F on the keyboard.
You should get a screen very soon this way.

Re: No video, long beeps, and error code 0.4. on AV8

I got a singlw 512mb stick of Kingston from TigerDirect yesterday and installed it this morning.

    It now works!

I plan on having co-worker or two of mine try the old memory on his system. If it works I'll let them have them for $20~$25 each so I can by another stick or two. If not, I'll just send it to the manufacturer.

I never OC'd it, so it sould still be under warranty.

I'm so happy, happy, happy! .... and looks like my data is safe!

Thanks for all your help people!

I am pleased you got it going, I bought an AV8 during this saga and then read this and thought oh no here we go. But everything worked, it was a second user board, six months old, replacing my venerable KX-333. I'm using 2 x 512 0f PQI powerram and a Thermaltake purepower 420W for those interested. The best is that I booted into windowsXP on the via setup from the older KT333 chipset. I have since reinstalled drivers and plan to do a fresh windows install this weekend. It does feel bullet proof though.
