    Question DirctX 10 GFX cards

    Hi all

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and that the new year is better than this one, no matter good this one might have been to you.

I was reading about MS Flight Simulator 10 and understand it will take advantage of DX10 technology. I am in the planning stage of a new system build I wanted to start buying parts for in Jan. To be honest I haven't looked at GFX cards yet. I am mostly checking ram and power supplies that work best with the DFI Expert board. CPU and GFX card(s) were to be last on my list.

Since I see games will be using DX10 very soon now, I need to know if any current GFX cards support DX10? I would hate to spend an extreme amount of money on a 7800GTX 512 only to find then that it can't use DX10 technology.

If no cards now support DX10, does anyone know of a card about to come out that does?

    Thanks

direct x 10 hasnt even been officially released yet. I doubt any game titles will be using it soon considering how long it took games to use dx9 even after it was out. But this is just my guess as I dont really know for sure. I can tell you that no current cards support it on a hardware level.

when they release DX10 it will be a good year before you get games using it.

    Re: DirctX 10 GFX cards

Hi guys thanks for the replys.

From what I have been able to gather DX10 will be part of Vista and probably not be available until Vista's release.
However, Microsoft's Flight Simulator 10 will have full support for DirectX-10. FS10 might be out in Feb. 2006.
So it seems that FS10 will be ready for the future. This fact makes me wonder if some games currently under development are being coded to take advantage of DX10?
    Now back to my hardware concerns;
No GFX cards now support DX10, but will we see new cards in the near future that will have support for it, even if it might be late 2006 before Vista's release?
I mean, I really don't see a point in buying a $750.00 GFX card right now, if in a matter of months cards begin to show up that will support DX10. If cards will be coming soon that are 'future' ready, I would be far better off to get one of them.

I fully understand that no matter what how good a GFX card is today, tomorrow something better will come out. So, if DX10 cards are right around the corner, I don't want to buy a high end DX9 card now.

I am sure many new games will not support DX10. Although with one game coming in a couple months that does support it, I feel other will soon follow. No one in the gaming industry wants to be left behind.

I'm sure some of you understand my concern. This next build needs to be as 'future' ready as possible, since it will likely be 2-3 years before I build another. So if anyone has heard anything about the next gen cards, please post your findings.

    Thank you

I havent heard ANYTHING about new cards supporting DX10....I feel you'll be waiting quite a while my friend. Though I heard your gonna have to have 128-256 MB video memory just to run Vista Cause of its GUI...But thats just what I heard, dont quote me on that.

    Hi mate
I haven't heard about the 128-256 vid ram requirement. This is quite possible though, but only if Vista uses full FX in the GUI. It has some kind of 'auto' adjustment that will scale the FX based on the capability of the hardware.

I really don't know what to do. I am beginning to think now isn't the best time to build a new system. Or at least not the right time to buy a high end GFX card. I'm going to do some more research and then figure out what to get. I might just get a cheap pcie card for now and then get a pair of what ever comes out with dx10 support later on. LOL, by then we may see cards with a gig of ram on them.

Gig of RAM on the card? Now thats WAYYYYYYY in the future...at least I think so. Cards with 512 MB of RAM on them still cost an arm and a leg....double that? Psshhhh, it might be possible...if you wanna pay at least a grand for the card.

    Re: DirctX 10 GFX cards

I suppose that when VISTA comes out its specs will start to demand newer and "better" hardware. I think DX10 is part of Vista. 2Gb of system RAM seem to be the going concensus plus a PCI-e vidcard with 128mb ram ( all of here are or will be past this spec soon). Monitors with HDCP copy protection for HD content. Pushing Vista on us will push the DX10 spec. So say that by the beginning of 2007 we should see DX10 vidcards (?).

Any clues about Nvidias next GPU? DX9 only? HDCP support? Buy a new monitor and hope to watch HD with Vista yopu better have meet the spec. ( HD content will not play otherwise...so I've read).

Next year also brings AMDs M socket procs that support DDR2.... another monkey wrench in the works.

DX10? It should not be a solid issue till late 06 or o7.

The last thing I've heard of, is PS4.0 cards that were supposed to have been scheduled for April 2006. This was an Inquirer rumour shortly before or after the 7800 GTX 256MB release time. But this seems unlikely now, since we'll have the G71/R480 in 1 month; unless these chips have it, something unlikely.

    Re: DirctX 10 GFX cards

    Hi again

I just found out at AVSIM that MS is saying a Q4 release for FS10. So this is near the release of Vista. I have no idea where PC Gamer mag got the Feb 2006 release date, but it wrong.

So now my mind is somewhat at ease about the DX10 question.
I will go on with my plans to build a new system, but most likely not go sli until DX10 cars are out. I am still interested in the 7800GTX 512, but only one of them, not two.
Since it will be at least a year before DX10 cards (just guessing based on Vista and what you guys have said here), whatever I get won't be replaced until at least then, if not later.

Thanks for helping clear all this up for me guys

Goodluck with the 512 7800 Its in limited supply, very expensive, and VERY big...I heard it wont fit most cases.
