    Artifacts on windows load.

on the windows XP loading bootup screen I get artifacts all over it. I also get green horizontal lines running across videos whenever I play them in media player or VLC.

I can play games fine without any artifacts (FEAR, AOE3).

    Rig is:

    Athlon 2600XP
    Radeon 9800 pro 128mb
    1gb Corsair XMS PC3200
    80gb IDE HD

    nothing overclocked.

Anyone got a clue why its doing this? I just tried running ATI Tool to see its frequency and ATI tool has artifacts ALL over it.

    Nothing is overclocked.

I have a Volcano 12 on the CPU, temp is at 43C, the graphics card has a Giant III cooler on it running at 36C...

You think its a driver issue even though its happening before any drivers are loading at the bootup screen?

Im really puzzled on what to do...

    drop clocks a bit

add a couple 120mm fans overhead to drop temps by 10+ celsiusD.S.C-12(2)-disclaimer : whatever u do with your hardware/software is your

Thats how things started when my Voodoo 5500 craped out. It just got progressively worse and windows would lock up. Eventually windows wouldn't even load a desktop and I ended up replacing the card. I hadn't changed any drivers prior to this happening and trying to reinstall windows failed so I know it wasn't the drivers for the card.
I don't know the same things you don't know.

I was gonna say, textbook hardware failure on the card. Sometimes the capacitors are dry.

Might try it in another motherboard, or try to get someone to reasonably diagnose it for you without some sort of massive fee.

IMO, though, the time to try and find the correct capacitors, and then buying them, with shipping, and the chance you take it might not even work. Garbage can.

Sometimes I'm too busy to comprehend what I read. That's very odd. 2D failure? Hugh?

try running sfc /scannow in command terminal. You'll need your Windows XP disk.
