How Much Power Do I Need for My Rig (Now a HSF Question)?

Specs are below. Gonna eventually add 2 more SATA drives, 2 more sticks of RAM, and hook up my old Memorex 40max to make it a dual optical drive system. I think either my Antec 550W True Power is too noisy or my case sucks for sound reduction. It's mainly excessive fan whirling from my PSU, and I thought Antec makes quiet PSUs? I think I'm gonna go with an Antec Sonata II case, which comes with a 450W Smart Power 2 PSU. Can I get away with an Antec 450W PSU?

Well, the Sonata II is already gonna come with the Antec 450W Smart Power 2.

If the psu is loud, it'll be. No matter what case it's in. The back is always exposed. That's where the sound comes from.

Enermax is almost noiseless when idle. For absolute noiselessness, go with a Zalman. Especially those with fans.

Actually, it's my friggin heatsink fan. It's a Spire Kestrel King VI copper that came installed with my barebones system. Spins at about 5000 RPMs, it's horrendously loud. I stopped it with a pen and my system went near silent.

My current CPU runs at 43-45C doing everyday normal stuff. Kind of hot already. I'm trying to figure out a way where I can simply swap out the 80mm heatsink fan, for maybe a Nexus that runs at 1500 RPMs. Will my CPU heat up to undesireable temps? I can't seem to figure out how to use the Speedfan software to slow my fans down to test out slower RPMs.

I guess the worse case scenario I can get a Scythe Ninja. Looks like it'll fit my mobo, as it doesn't look like there are any capacitors in the way.

I have never tried a fanless heatsink on a CPU so can not comment on the Ninja you posted about - sorry. I'm sure someone else here has had experience with them, though.

The fans on CPU heatsinks can be amazingly loud. I had a Vantec Tornado on mine until I couldn't stand the noise any more. I preferred the higher CPU temp to the awful racket this thing made! You can get fan adaptors so that you can go with a larger fan, such as an 80mm to 92mm adapter - the bigger the fan, the quieter it can be, usually. 80mm fans are usually the loudest, in my experience. You could also get a Panaflo 80mm fan, such as the U1A, if you don't want to go the adapter route - Panaflos are some of the quietest fans around and put out quite a bit of CFMs even so.

This HSF was recommended to me by BWM in another thread:

Newegg also sells it, and almost all of the reviews there are positive. It is supposed to cool well and the fan is reported to be nice and quiet, too. I'm probably going to get one for my new system.

You call that friggin loud. LOL. Have you heard of Tornados? The 80mm moves more cfm's than my walmart floor fan.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro looks like a winner. I'd recommend a Zalman 7700+alcu if you're not overclocking the cpu.

    http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/c...24tower112.htm

is the one in my friend's 3800+ rig. It's compatible with everything. He has moved from s478 to s939 platforms no problem. Stick a fan on the front that blows towards the rear exhaust, or on the bottom blowing into the PSU intake.

Seasonic PSUs are pretty good for a premium. But I find their amps on the +12v rails are rather low.

Oh and I meant to say Zalman fanless PSUs that weight a ton.

Re: How Much Power Do I Need for My Rig (Now a HSF Question)?

Holly, my current HSF moves about 35 CFM @ 5000 RPM. Going with a quieter 80mm fan means lower RPM and lower CFM. Most of the good quiet fans will move about 20 CFM @ 1500 RPM. That's about 40% less than what I have now. The question is, how much of a CPU temp increase will I see?

Sounds like the 80mm to 92mm adapter will be necessary, or just a new HSF unit altogether.
BTW, the HSF unit you're looking at isn't highly rated by SPCR. There's a similar Artic Freezer one, however.

Re: How Much Power Do I Need for My Rig (Now a HSF Question)?

SubliminalX - I personally am not looking for a Silent PC; the site rated the cooling as very good but too loud for their purposes. Everything I have read about the Arctic Freezer Pro says it's quieter than the stock HSF, and that is all I am looking for - good cooling and relatively quiet.

    holly:
I recommend a thermalright hsf (XP90 or SI120) or the Cooler Master Cooler Master Hiper 6+. Swifttech unit looks like an excelleny choice to go wtih also. Good Luck with which ever one you decide to go with.

ww2717 - sorry I didn't respond until now. I had already purchased the Arctic Freezer. I received it yesterday and installed it. I'm still building the system so have no idea if it operates the way I need it to. It was very easy to install though. If it doesn't work out, I will look into the other HSFs you recommended.

SubliminalX - what have you decided to do?

Re: How Much Power Do I Need for My Rig (Now a HSF Question)?

Silence is addicting I first started off building a quiet system, then it got quieter and quieter, and now I'm aiming for silence. A scythe when close enough to a PSU or the rear exhaust fan probably doesn't need a additional fan. I'll post some numbers next week after I get my X2 system going (with a scythe cooler).

SubliminalX, try and get rid of the northbridge cooler also, since those fans are usually screaming banshees also. With a coolermaster or zalman passive cooler, you will get by with decent temperatures especially if you have a intake fan in front of your case.
