    I finally played Half-Life 2

I downloaded Steam and the demo. Man this game sure doesn't look as good as I remember it looking when it first came out, it hasn't aged well. I couldn't play it long, I started feeling sick and my head felt wierd. I know it is only a small demo, but from what I played it seemed way too linear. Is the whole game like this?

    Yes.

It makes me feel ill after a bit too. I still quite liked the game, but it doesn't have much repeat play value.

Reapeat play value for me = playing it shortly after it came out and then had to wait about 6 months before I could enjoy it again.

I just finished reading George Orwell's "1984" and realized that Valve borrowed a lot of its concepts and ideas from dystopian literature in general. After going through some of that I decided to play the game again. Welcome to City 17.

    Re: I finally played Half-Life 2

    Hi all

I too played it when it first came out. I am just now playing it for the second time.
It is going pretty well, since I don't remember everything about it.
I guess I would have to agree about the replay value. It wasn't a game I wanted to jump back into once I completed it the first time. Nothing like back when Undying came out. I must have played it through at least 4 or 5 times. LOL, if I hadn't of given it to a friend a couple years ago, I would play it again. HL2 just didn't do that for me.

I cant complain either, I'm on my second way through on my new monitor. Playing at 1280x1024 with everything on high and 4x AA and 8x AF and it looks beautiful. Cant wait to play Episode 1 with HDR

The thing is that HL2's graphical techniques are a lot older than just a year. Source was all about high polygon counts and texture resolutions, which are two things that will constantly improve. If a game doesn't have a fancy new technique to stand on then it'll probably look dated pretty fast. Doom 3's shadowing springs to mind, watching a fight between the little drones and an imp by just watching the shadows on the walls never gets old. Everything else looks dated, but it does have its one gimmick that still looks impressive. BTW, a lot of people who were feeling sick had better luck running with a different frustum angle. As I recall the default one is 70 degrees, most games these days use around a 90 degree angle.

And yes, the whole frickin' game is extremely linear. I'm not a fan of sandbox games or anything, but HL2 goes way too far in the other direction. Too much of it is trial and error. I would have been much happier had I been able to skip the driving sections somehow.

No. The game just didn't give me the WOW factor after I finished it. Fun? Yes. WOW? no.

Nothing has given me the "WOW" factor except for Far Cry

Oh jeez, Far Cry fanatic? ^_^

But try this to fix the sickness you're feeling:

(this is how you do it in CS:S, I haven't played HL2 in a while) Go to Options, then hit the advanced button. Check "enable developer's console".

Hit the ` button (to the left of 1) and type these in:

    sv_cheats 1
    fov 90

    Those are two separate commands.

    That might fix it.
Got plenty of disk space now...might need more soon though ^_^

i guess to be fair, hdr is not a part of the original hl2 game, but when aftermath comes out, which will be a stand alone game. supposed to be 4-6 hours long, i wonder what it'll cost though? they said they're adding a lot of stuff in though, i guess it should be pretty well pakced with more of the saga.

It's not Aftermath anymore, it's called "Episode 1". They remade Half-Life 1 Deathmatch, so it's HL1DM:S now. It's $20 bucks, and from what csnation said, you don't need HL2 to play it.
