WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A deputy press secretary for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was arrested Tuesday at his Maryland home on charges he used his computer in an attempt to seduce a child and transmitted harmful materials to a minor, according to the Polk County, Florida, Sheriff's Office.

Brian J. Doyle, 55, is charged with seven counts of use of a computer to seduce a child and 16 counts of transmission of harmful material to a minor, according to a sheriff's office statement.

In interviews with police, Doyle confessed and has agreed to waive extradition to Florida, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.

On March 12, according to a police statement, Doyle contacted a Polk County computer crimes detective posing online as a 14-year-old girl "and initiated a sexually explicit conversation with her ... Doyle knew that the 'girl' was 14 years old, and he told her who he was and that he worked for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security."

Judd said that Doyle, in the first conversation, told the detective his position with DHS and "started immediately into pretty vulgar language. He explained in graphic detail the sexual acts he wanted to perform with this 14-year-old."

As the two continued chatting online, police said, Doyle gave her his home and office phone numbers, and the number to his government-issue cell phone. He also had explicit telephone conversations with a detective posing as the girl, authorities said.

In addition, he used the Internet to send "hard-core pornographic movie clips" to her, and also used an America Online instant-messaging service to have explicit online conversations with her.

"The investigation revealed that the phone numbers given to the detective were in fact Doyle's, and that the AOL account was registered to him," police said.

Doyle also sent photos of himself that were not sexually explicit, but said he would send nude photos if the "girl" would buy a Web camera and send him nude photos of herself. In one photo, Judd said, Doyle's DHS security tag is clearly visible.

"Many of the conversations he initiated ... are too extraordinary and graphic for public release," a statement from the sheriff's office said.

"I read the transcripts," Judd said. "I wanted to see if this was just as outrageous as the detectives depicted it ... It shocked all of us who have worked vice, narcotics, organized crime, homicides."

A DHS spokesman said the agency would cooperate in the probe. "We take these allegations very seriously," Russ Knocke said, "and we will cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation."

Doyle, Judd said, is divorced and has children. Authorities believe he could have held similar conversations online with others, Judd said, because at some points during online chats he would address the detective by the wrong name.

Doyle never attempted to arrange a visit, Judd said, but did mention knowing someone in the region.

Before Doyle was arrested Tuesday night at his home in Silver Spring, Judd said, the detective had told him that she had access to a Web camera and that her mother would be away, so "he was eager to rush home from work."

As he was online, detectives from agencies including the U.S. Secret Service and the Montgomery County, Maryland, Police Department knocked on his door and served the arrest warrant, Judd said. They also executed a search warrant for his residence.

"We found his communication still on his computer with our undercover detective," he said. "Had we not been posing as a 14-year-old, Brian Doyle would have been grooming someone, some young lady, for a sexual encounter."

CNN's Jeanne Meserve contributed to this report.

Atleast this guy was only a deputy press secretary. I'll sleep better at night now.

Unreal huh? I read about the guy late last night and thought is he freakin nuts? Of all places to work and be pulling this crap? The only conceivable justification I could think of was he got tangled up as part of some[his own/work related] investigation...but that doesnt seem to be the case.
I wouldnt bank on that Federal retirement package if I were him.

I'm confused. Are you making fun of the person, or the DHS because of this person. I'm fairly sure every organization, or at the very least every gov't one, has "special" people in it. Ad hominem, anyone?
And to dangtx, of couse the gov't is like that. It's made of people. And some people are like that.

Just my thoughts. I don't care much for him or the organization myself.

My thoughts almost exactly. You can't really fault the organization... that would be like saying the police force is corrupt because you found a cop taking bribes. There are, and will continue to be, bad apples everywhere.

As for this guy in particular... wow. Talk about abuse of authority. And not to mention the danger to national security. Imagine if the detective had been a terrorist. This guy played right into her trap by revealing his position, the authorization badge he wore, ect. I have a feeling he's about to disappear to a very unpleasant place. And deserves it.

Here is what will be interesting. Lets see if this guy gets a rougher sentence than the perky blond teacher who actually DID have sexual contact with a student.
Something tells we he isnt gonna walk [if found guilty]. And yes I understand the cases arent exactly the same but certainly the intention was similar.

^^^I think you summed up what I was saying here. Nobody's trying to fault a whole organization.

Don't forget the other Homeland Security guy last year in Florida that exposed himself to a sixteen year old girl in a mall. He just pleaded no contest.

Is he charged with soliciting a minor because he solicited the undercover intarweb agent? I'm not defending the perv, but come on, that makes no sense. If he was soliciting a cop, he wasn't soliciting a minor, regardless of whether or not the cop was posing as a minor. I still think that sort of operation is entrapment, regardless of whether people give it a pass or not just because everyone hates pervs. Then again those guys must be complete retards if they're still falling for stuff like that in spite of how widely publicized and commonplace such operations are.

So how exactly do you propose catching them? Actually letting a 14 year old girl talk dirty to him? In a court of Law, the first question the defense attorney will ask is, "Did you actually witness Mr. Whatever talk dirty to a minor?" When the prosecution says, "No" it gets thrown out of court. Hearsay is not enough to convict.

You call it entrapment, I call it necessary. It's no different than a "speed trap". Just because you got caught doesn't excuse you from the crime. We can't very well STOP hunting these freaks just because, heaven forbid, tricking them into revealing themselves upsets their warped idea of "fair play".

You can't compare this to a speed trap because if you're caught by a speed trap, you were actually SPEEDING. If your speedometer was broken and told you that you were going 120 mph when actually you're only going 65, you're not breaking the law, even if circumstances might lead you to believe otherwise.

It's not a matter of what I think should be done, it's a matter of interpreting the law and either applying it fairly and equally to everyone (as it should be) or making exceptions just because a certain group or type of people are unpopular. Certainly there is no group less popular than pervs, but does that mean we should throw the law out the window when dealing with them? If so, then who next? Gays? Muslims? Immigrants? ACLU members? The Jews? Surely you see the problem here.
