Word...half-assed? I dont know, the only other game I know of with HDR is Oblivion (and Far Cry with a patch?)...so not really much to compare with. I agree though, the "half-assed" HDR in Source looks awesome! If thats half-assed I would love to see what "real, high quality" looking HDR is likeOriginally Posted by AMDTurbo

sources hdr is very nice if you ask me. i'm not sure but i believe nfs:mw has it too, though it may not officially be hdr, it's an hdr like effect, i think it looks good anyways, and there's a couple other games i think that have it, cod2 does too i believe.

Well, it's not officially hdr is what I mean. Real hdr (far cry for example) can only be done on ati card with AA+HDR

Wikipedia also uses term 'true HDR' only for HDR done using FP16 blending. That is the method of choice and will only get more popular in the future. Neither 6x00-series or 7x00-series card can do antialiasing at the same time as doing 'true HDR'.

he just proved that ati isn't the only one doing "true hdr"Originally Posted by sabrewolf732
fp16 is the requirement, something that can be found in the gf 6xxx series, something ati hasn't had until their latest bunch of cards.
aa+hdr doesn't mean it's true hdr is what i'm getting at.

6x00-series does support fp16 (apart from 6200, I think), yes, but it is simply too slow to make any real use of it. 7x00-series is already powerful enough, but 7x00 can simply not do fp16 HDR and AA at the same time.Originally Posted by SuBX3r0

No, you dont understand. NV cant do fp16 and AA. True hdr and AA at the same time. Whereas ATi can...Originally Posted by SuBX3r0

did you read the wiki? fp16 is what makes it true hdr according to the wiki, the inability to do both aa and hdr does not mean that nv can't do true hdr, it just means they can't do both.Originally Posted by sabrewolf732
you imply that both aa and hdr need to occure at the same time in order to be true hdr, which simply is not part of that wiki.
and on another note, i remember reading somewhere that the patch for farcry allows for both hdr and aa on both ati and nv cards.

Erm, that's what we've been saying. NV can't do FP16 AND AA at the same time. And no, only ati can do fp16 and aa in far cry.Originally Posted by SuBX3r0

when have i said anything to the contrary?Originally Posted by sabrewolf732
and supposedly with the 1.4 patch to farcry aa+hdr will be available to nv cards as well, dunno if it's true or how they'll accomplish it, but that's according to the release notes at guru3d for the beta patch.
i've tried the patch myself and when i enabled both i got some crazy rendering issues so thus far it seems the release notes are mistaken, or the patch (which is in beta i apparently) isn't ready for release just yet.
i'd like to see both implemented, though doing so you'd have to lower resolution as hdr or aa lone generally gives a good fps hit as it is, i was getting 50fps with hdr set to 7 and all settings maxed at 1600x1200, so with 4xaa i'm sure it'd probably be unplayable at those settings.
not to mention i believe there's hardware limitations or what not which do not allow it. but if they can do hdr to the affect that valve has and what is in nfs:mw i'd be happy, i think both do a fairly good job of making visuals just that much better, might nbot always be the most realistic, but it's certainly better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
ah well, maybe next gen.

Is Hdr+aa really needed? I mean in screen shots you can see a slight difference but given a game in motion does it really enhance the game that much?
I'm in the same boat (debating) between the 7900gt vs the x1800xt. I really like the idea that the 7900gt uses less power but i don't know if the x1800xt is faster because of better drivers or because the card is really 10% faster. hum... oh well 3 more weeks to think about it.
