    Asus 865PE or 945P for 775 cpu

I've bought an 805 dualie that I plan to OC and just found out that P5P800 SE mobo supports the Pentium D series of cpus. If I got this mobo, I wouldnt have to spend any extra cash on the new DDR2 ram but would using the older chipset and DDR ram inhibit the systems performance significantly? I plan to OC to about 3.4-3.6Ghz and want to get the most bang for the buck. Thanks.

id recommend the 945 or 955 chipset from intel, with ddr RAM so cheap nowadays.

those chips can hit 4ghz with a good mobo, ive seen all 805 over the 3.8 mark

Re: Asus 865PE or 945P for 775 cpu

I thought the P5P800 can't take a dual core because it doesn't provide enough voltage for a dual core CPU. I read that in toms hardware when they did the 4ghz project with a budget of $700. They went with the 9xx series chipset and a motherboard with 24pin ATX power connector and 4pin 12vlt connection. The p5p800se still uses the 20pin connection, so even if theres a bios update that allows the use a dual core, you'll need a beefy PSU to pump out enough amps thru the 20pin connector.

If you use dual core you need to go with the 945 chipset, as the 865 does not support it. You will need ddr2 as well because all 945's are ddr2.
