^^Nobody tougher on crime or more pro law enforcement than a liberal months away from an election.

Wait. I bet Robert "Sheets" Byrd will defend the guy.

^^I was right. Robert Byrd in this exclusive photo with his opening defense remarks:

Am I alone in sensing they're disturbed with his "getting caught on tape", more than with his being a crook. They seem to be afraid of Democrats looking like crooks, but lets face it, politicians are crooks. Maybe its just me and the slant I hold. I dunno.

    Re: More Corruption in Washington

Yeah, I read an article today that talked more about the Justice Dept. going after him than what he actually did. Something about searching his office and seperation of powers.

Now you know I am strongly in favor of seperation of powers, but only in the legal sense as it applies to citizens of the US. I find this congressional argument that Congress itself should be held above the law pretty damned revealing as to the prevailing attitudes in Congress.

Yep, politicians are crooks, all the evidence bears it out. And us voters are stupid because we keep voting them in. But then I think, who with integrity would run for congress? I'm leaning more towards term limits every day. I say we give them each ten minutes.

    Doubting Thomases on Jefferson

So, Congress is upset that William Jefferson’s office was searched by the FBI. Members of both parties complain about a separation-of-powers violation. Well, it’s a closer call than some in the executive branch may think. But the merits do seem to support the search. The speech-and-debate clause is not a blanket immunity. And the FBI didn’t just rush in and ransack Jefferson’s office. First, they reportedly subpoenaed the records. Jefferson (and his lawyers) apparently ignored it for months. Next, investigators sought a search warrant from a judge, who issued it. Therefore, the criticism by some members and “scholars” should be aimed not only at the executive branch, but the judiciary as well. (Gee, I thought Congress liked judicial review, which is exactly what occurred here.)

But it’s nice to know that Congress has a new-found respect for separation of powers. Perhaps next time they’ll think twice before subpoenaing the vice president’s energy-task-force records, or a judicial nominee’s legal memoranda from the time he served at the White House or Justice Department (Estrada, Roberts, and Alito come to mind).

Meanwhile, why hasn’t the House exercised its constitutional authority to expel Jefferson?

Exactly. Congress comes across as two-faced.

Meanwhile while Executive vs Legislative seems important to them the protections of the people take a back seat.

I too wonder why Jefferson is still a member of congress. Status guo I guess.

They're all in a tizzy today...because there's a crook in their midst? Nope. Because the FBI sought and obtained a warrant to search his office, and since he's a member of 'congress' he shouldn't be submitted to such legal harassment!

LOL, so there's finally something that our "esteemed" politicians can agree upon regardless of party. Neither side wants people checking up on their dealings. Gosh it's good to finally see some bi-partisan support of something coming from Washington.

It cracks me up....on one hand they are all scared shitless that this could happen to them, so they playing the phony outrage card at how the raid when down. Then Pelosi is demanding the guy's resignation, as if to say, well, we are all crooks, but you were too stupid to get caught so you can't play in the sandbox with the rest of us any more because you may have brought us all down with you.

    Ahhh, politics.

Pelosi is only asking for his resignation from the Ways and Means committee.
She must have another crook in mind.

Message: He's too crooked for that committee but fits right in in Congress.

^^^ I'd bow to the cries of discrimination IF they locked down all the congressional offices, locked everyone out, and did a complete shakedown of ALL the offices like they do to prisoners cells. No way they could claim discrimination if EVERYON got the same treatment. I'm sure this would lead to some much needed immediate openings.
